Re: Right speech in a blue collar environment
Where does the precepts talk about swearing and crude jokes? Perhaps the jokes are "idle', but then so are non crude ones. I also see little trouble with profanity so long as it isn't abusive or inappropriate for your position (I.e. customer service)

Re: Declensions--some questions
Nearly forgot. I understand the suggestion to skip the English to Pāḷi exercises, but I find them quite helpful. I'm nothing if not ambitious, and I aim to really master Pāḷi, and so I am working to eventually (no clue how long this will take!) get to the point where I can think in Pāḷi, so transla...

Re: Do Dhammapada verses 15, 16, imply an intermediate state?
Dhammapada verse 15-16 quoting from Thanissaro's translation: 15. The evil-doer grieves here and hereafter; he grieves in both the worlds. He laments and is afflicted, recollecting his own impure deeds. 16. The doer of good rejoices here and hereafter; he rejoices in both the worlds. He rejoices an...

Re: is living off tax money right living?
If you believe that government is inherently immoral, then the case could be made that living off tax money is wrong livelihood. Since I don't think government is inherently immoral, I do not think living off tax money is inherently wrong livelihood. If, however, the government did collect taxes whi...

Re: Declensions--some questions
I first tried to write in Pali, but have always found it hard to do. Like you, I often wondered what the rules were, so to speak. So I'm of little help there, except to pass on a bit of advice from B. Bodhi: begin with De Silva's Pali primer without worrying much about doing the English-to-pali exer...

Re: Unintentional matricide/patricide
Obviously something was lost in the translation. Maybe, what the elder actually said was that one commits the crime of matricide or patricide whether one knows that the victim is one's mother or father, or not. If there is the intention to kill a human being, one knows it is a human being, one make...

Re: Buddhist practice and health
As often is the case, a distinction should be drawn between lay and ordained audiences in the Pali canon. Lay persons were seldom advised on how much to eat or drink, but were encouraged to be mindful to take what is appropriate for them (i.e. the advice to king pasenadi ). Perhaps there are other p...

Re: DhammaWheel Public Library Challenge
I donated a handful of Buddhist books my local library a year (?) ago. In the Buddha's Words was among them. I asked the front desk for the name and email of the curator for the adult non-fiction section. I then emailed her and discussed which books she would take and which she wouldn't. She accepte...

Re: What would you learn?
Math. From grade 1 on through to dropping out of high school I figured I was bad at math. Yet I loved computer programming. Now in my thirties, I've decided to build my math skills, upgrade my high school record, and possibly enroll in a computer science program, or maybe an applied mathematics. Of ...
