Re: Bhikkhu Bodhi on War and Thanissaro's rebuttal
Hmm! It seems that fundamentalism is alive and well, and gaining over tolerance and reason. The fundamentalists should read the Buddha's teaching a bit more, as Bhikkhu Bodhi has done extensively. Mahākammavibhanga Sutta (Ñanamoli Thera's Translation) "When he says thus: 'It seems that one who kill...

Re: Bhikkhu Bodhi on War and Thanissaro's rebuttal
My My point is that Buddhist shouldn't call violence 'morally commendable', Just to be clear here: I am not calling violence morally commendable, but it may be necessary. I didn't think you did, but B. Bodhi (hesitantly) adopted that view in the snippet David provided above. I don't blame a lay per...

Re: Bhikkhu Bodhi on War and Thanissaro's rebuttal
My first objection is that people already need little reason to think their violence is justified, and leaders have little trouble convincing their people that some enemy will do them harm if they get their chance. As we've seen recently, even people born in Buddhist society are ready to burn down a...

Re: What music are you listening to right now?
This is Kawehi. She does original works, but her youtube channel has a lot of covers, each of which I like better than I do the originals. I like most of her songs, so I'm a bit indecisive. Sorry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=077UlBtrqWs&list=UU1F1EVFBl3Kg7_aUvQ-nBOg https://www.youtube.com/watch...

Re: Where does one go on attaining Nibbana
1. Once you've attained nibbana, you no longer have a fixed conception of you and no longer place any importance on whether you continue or cease, or change or whatever. But, to the point, Nibbana is not a place and no one can 'go there'. You simply cease to cling to your own existence and no longe...

Re: Age difference in relationship
My wife and I have been together for 10 years (9 married, one not). It's been pretty rough for much of it, but I don't think that has as much to do with our age difference as it does with our personality differences. Possibly we've had trouble from a difference in sex drive, with me being younger an...

Re: The Experience of Coma
I haven't, but my grandfather was in a coma for several months. He said it was a long, long dream of being strapped to a flatbed pickup truck - and that it was cold. Which didn't surprise me, as they kept his room really cool and he was stretched almost flat with next to nothing on, with a ventilato...

You know what? nevermind everyone. I didn't intend for this carry on like this, It's interfering with my practice at the moment and I wouldn't want it to interfere with yours. Whether I'm in the wrong or not it's not worth pushing my viewpoint anymore while causing unneeded stress and besides I did...

Re: Why An Illusory Self Is Needed
Why would a man have to travel through life is a question answered by most religions by using God's will. It is a very important question after all - why do I have to be born, live, suffer, die. In fact "What is the meaning of life? " is the most important existential question. Why at all this worl...

Re: self pleasure or drink?
My post was a joke about being addicted to booze verses addicted to adultery, the doing of either being a violation of the five precepts -- in contrast to wanking.... But what is wrong with what I did? Because I personally feel like practice shouldn't be just some sort of hobby you can do on the si...

Re: gaps in between the breath
What should I focus on in between the breaths while there is a pause? focus on the pause - if you're focusing on the nose, feel how the nose feels when the breath is still. If you're focusing somewhere in the body, notice if the pause has a tense feeling, or a feeling of relaxation. There are sure ...
