They look nice in the photos, but I've had mixed luck with Overstock, and I imagine a statue would be pricey to return.

I especially love the "pondering" Buddhas (is that what that posture is called?) in the top row.

Any recommendations for how to find local stores that might carry Buddha statues for a shrine?
I tried searching for "Buddha statue" in Yelp but got a bunch of New Age stores and various Buddhist temples. Online stores would be fine, too, though I'd prefer to look in person. Thank you!

Re: Tips for dealing with intrusive noise when practicing mindfulness?
Mindfulness practice is about attending to whatever is happening here and now, it's not about shutting out some experiences and concentrating on others, it sounds like you are doing concentration practice not mindfulness practice. With mindfulness practice you should notice that you are hearing, no...

Re: Any recommended teachings, talks, or advice for dealing with noise?
@Volovksy and @paul, I have tried many noise canceling headphones - including top of the line ones by Bose as well ones designed for shooting ranges. None block the sounds of my neighbors - loud voices, children screaming, dogs barking, etc.

...and the famous Ajahn Chah passage, which actually comes in several forms throughout his collected teachings: It's the same with sankhāras. We say they disturb us, like when we sit in meditation and hear a sound. We think, ''Oh, that sound's bothering me.'' If we understand that the sound bothers...

Re: Finding quiet living conditions as a householder
Irritation to sound is a good meditation object it's aversion watch the aversion pass and sound won't bother you. I have been trying to do this; thanks for the suggestion. I will keep trying. I notice that the anger lingers for quite some time - perhaps because it brings up the memories of all the ...

Re: Finding quiet living conditions as a householder
Hello: As a householder i just moved to a rural area. If you cant do that, there are always quiet neighborhoods in the cities. You can also make an investment in sound isolation for your house or apartment. If you cant do any of those, just make more money so in the future you can solve the problem...

Re: Finding quiet living conditions as a householder
Yeah, I moved out to a farm to get away from people and noise. I rent a meadow from a friendly farmer, and I live there by myself in a yurt. I have solar panels, a log fire, and even a little kitchen. The loudest noises are the birds, and sometimes a strong wind roaring in the trees. That sounds am...

Re: Do you like or dislike devotional practices?
What are some examples of devotional practices that one might do at home? I must be a very typical Western Buddhist, because I don't even know what this entails. Chanting? Lighting incense in front of a Buddha image?

Finding quiet living conditions as a householder
As an adult I’ve often run into issues with noise in my living situations. I strive to be an 8 preceptor and to always maintain mindfulness throughout the day, and I think in some ways my practice has increased my sensitivity to external noise. Or, to try to put it another way, I've developing a str...

Re: Any recommended talks / teachings on equanimity?
Firstly, a caution that equanimity should not be taken as a stand-alone remedy: “And how is striving fruitful, how is exertion fruitful? There is the case where a monk, when not loaded down, does not load himself down with pain, nor does he reject pleasure that accords with the Dhamma, although he ...

Re: Any recommended talks / teachings on equanimity?
There's a good article by Ajahn Sucitto on the Brahma-Viharas that I really like, which discusses equanimity along with the others in a practical way: Equanimity holds a caring space that allows us to grow. It trusts that we can go through what we need to experience; it is love manifesting as trust...
