Re: What does ego mean?

Ego is a word from Latin, so you could start looking into it from that perspective. It tends to bring with it me and mine. When it is challenged it grows stronger. When you fight it you feed it. But leaving it alone just makes it return to a dormant state, until the next time it feels threatened. T...

What does ego mean?

I put this in CtOP section because the English language is a sort of path (channel of communication). I cannot understand meaning of the word ego. One website describes it as - the “I” or self of any person; a person as thinking, feeling, and willing, and distinguishing itself from the selves of oth...

Re: Negative thoughts to positive

Is that not bordering on self hypnosis? Auto-suggestion? Yes, it's a method used in psychotherapy and Mahayana. But it is usually based on a line of reasoning which makes the desired thought appear to be real or true. From the perspective of vipassana doctrine however it is coursing in formations (...

Re: Negative thoughts to positive

Is that not bordering on self hypnosis? :namaste: I'm not sure what self-hypnosis would amount to, but this would mean generating positive attitudes so that things did not appear as afflictive. Telling oneself that something is bearable when it is not and believing what one is telling oneself is hy...

Re: Negative thoughts to positive

See Nicolas' post, and the link I posted. There is also of course the Brahma-viharas . But those don't describe "changing one's negative thoughts into positive thoughts", they don't describe changing the proverbial water into the proverbial wine, or orange juice, for that matter. An example of "cha...

Re: Swami Sarvapriyanand?

Swami Sarvapriyananda? It appears this Swami is more like a Buddhist monk (no beard or hair) He is a monk of Ramakrishna Mission who look/dress remarkably like Theravada monks (pure coincidence). Many Hindu monks are free of beard and hair and dress in ochre robes. Listening to him would confuse yo...

Re: Does the Dhamma take care of its own?

Does the Dhamma take care of its own? No, one is left to die in the gutter. What did you expect? That you'd be spared the ultimate test? Could you wait till end of page 2 before tossing the grenade in the foxhole :guns: You cannot nod at something like this, this is when you give a stern and Loving...

You cannot nod at something like this, this is when you give a stern and Loving rebuke, espousing Buddhist doctrine of nonviolence so that they will eventually change their minds. Uh .. I ...

Does the Dhamma take care of its own?

Rather strange question and I do not know if there are any references in the sutta. If one lives very strictly in line with the Dhamma (dot all i's and cross all t's) it means giving up not only lust, greed and similar but also other important things that matter a lot .. Such as networking .. online...

What is difference between Mindfulness and Vipassana meditation

I have downloaded an app created by US Department of Veteran Affairs which teaches mindfulness. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gov.va.mobilehealth.ncptsd.mindfulnesscoach&hl=en&gl=US The instructions are very similar to what I have found in vipassana books and YT videos. What is the d...

Universe - Chaotic or Ordered in Buddhism

Universe or samsara - is it chaotic or ordered in Buddhism? Hinduism and Christianity says it is ordered .. [not to imply that an ordered universe is run by (a) God .. though that would sort of make sense] This is not a God vs no-God question. But rather if what happens is random or nonrandom (there...

Re: I find Bible to be the only true book among religions/spiritual teachings, etc

.... I have always found the Bible to be very soothing. "He brought me up also out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings." Psalms 40.2 "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary." Is...

Re: Buddhist approach to closure.

Nevertheless there's still the faculty of faith which seems to be independent of sotapanna status. So maybe that faith might be a basis for the "closure" you are seeking. Or a big ego. Ego works well too. That, and vodka, or so I've heard. Binocular! We are on the same team. Never thought I would s...
