Re: Meditation is dangerous?
I think the harm in meditation comes from following un-buddhist techniques, such as those that supposedly open up our third eye, or take us out of our bodies. Basically meditation with something other than the ceasation of suffering and the devolopment of wisdom as its goal is harmful in my view. As...

Hello and welcome
Do not be embarressed by any questions that you might have - there is no such thing as a stupid question. At least in Buddhism there isn't anyway. You won't be judged by what you know or don't know.
Best wishes

Re: psychiatric drugs and the fifth precept
It's a tough question, because while anti-psychotics do intoxicate, you have to consider which type of intoxication is worse, the intoxication of psychosis or the intoxication of anti-psychotic drugs? From what I have seen the intoxication of psychosis can be more dangerous, but obviously it varies ...

Re: mental illness
Laurens, I am not insisting that we are qualified to treat them (some of us might be, some might not). I am insisting that the mental health system's competency in this area be taken into question, or else not recommended. The techniques used today have poor success rates, and are not as tried and ...

Re: mental illness
I think those rules are in place simply because we are Buddhists, not doctors. If a person is suffering from mental health issues we are not qualified to offer advice. Because the majority of us are unqualified to treat or offer advice to people suffering from mental illness, it could potentially re...

Re: Dana - suggested places to make donations
I don't know if it is entirely relevant to this topic, but here is a site in which for each question you answer correctly they donate 10 grains of rice through the UN World Food Program to help end hunger.

Some questions about walking meditation
I have been doing sitting meditation for a good while now, but I feel I want to incorperate walking meditation into my practice more, as I hear that it has many benefits. My meditation practice is to follow the breath around the tip of the nose, I use 'Bud-dho' to aid my concentration. I understand ...

Re: Musings on Self-Defense
From a biography of Ajahn Chah by Ajahn Jayasaro: "He [Ajahn Chah] had one experience where he was in his glot [??] in the forest and these wild dogs came. It was very freightening cause you've just got a very thin cotton curtain between you and all these very fierce wild dogs, but again this idea o...
