Re: Torturers go to Hell

As for the point you were trying to make with the rest of your post - it's just full of mischaracterizations of Buddhism. The Buddha later realized the severe austeries portion of his life prior to awakening were "painful, ignoble, not connected to the goal," right and wrong from a Buddhist perspec...

Re: Torturers go to Hell

I did ask where you were getting that idea from in my first response to you. Thank you for your honesty in saying what you have actually observed. Combining a scene from a movie with a secondhand report and turning that into a generalized statement about "a typical Zen meditation hall" still counts...

Re: Torturers go to Hell

Is this "typical Zen meditation hall" based upon actual experience, or just an idea you acquired from somewhere? To answer your question directly: No, I practiced Zazen by myself, but never in a meditation hall. However, you seem to get stuck in unnecessary details and overlooking the essence of th...

Re: Torturers go to Hell

On my Facebook page I posted that those who intentionally inflict pain go to Hell, and the only difference between torturers and their subjects is that some of the victims may not be guilty. Most agreed, but two unfriended. What do you think? In a typical Zen meditation hall, some senior monks will...

Re: Transhumanism

Hello Sam, That's fine. I don't agree with your point about what nibbana ends, on the grounds that the sutta that I quoted (among others) appears to suggest that it ends more. I have pointed out that your conclusion may well be true, but that it is not based on sound reasoning in that the conclusion...

Re: Transhumanism

Thanks for the explanation Dave, and sorry for asking too many questions, but what you meant by "the final break up of the aggregates" is death?

Re: Transhumanism

I stated that Nibbana ends only mental stress... Well, some inflows are yet to be endured - flies, the cold & heat, body aches - but these are of an altogether different order for an arahant. And, the final cessation of those is also brought about with the final breakup of the aggregates. So both a...

Re: Transhumanism

Hello Sam, Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm not sure how fruitful this type of cross-examination is going to be, but here goes.... If done with the intention to find the truth rather than for the sake of arguing, i cant be sure if its going to be fruitful, but i can be almost certain that it...

Re: Transhumanism

Let us look at the second and third kind of suffering that has been mentioned in the Sutta you provided. Although the Buddha classified them in this particular instance as two, i personally fail to see the difference. Conditionality and change in my mind are the same thing. If you believe that they...

Re: Transhumanism

nanotech has a relative advantage which is the end of physical pain, so i would personally go for nanotech. You lost me. Your argument sounded at first like you were going to say Nibbana because it's the end of mental suffering and because "Nano-Tech" can't be a cure for mental suffering, but you g...

Re: Transhumanism

It would be great to be free from physical pain and mental stress, but there is more to Dukkha than these. Hello Sam, Would you please elaborate what is the difference between Dukkha and mental stress? are they two different things? "Monks, there are these three kinds of suffering.[1] What three? S...
