Re: The Neanderthals live on in us

The third species are the Denisovians. But there are vague indications that there may be even more, from our African past. The Neanderthals is a fascinating subject. We should forget all the old caricatures and cartoons, and try to see them as they really were - very close to us, or as some sutra sa...

Re: Should we offer food to Buddha?

One solution is this: If you wish to offer food, go out in the street and give the food to someone who needs it and can eat it. Afterwards you can go back and bow to the Buddha.

Re: What do you think about the Visuddhimagga?

My view on Visuddhimagga comes very close to what Mike wrote. When first I read it, I read the English translation, and I found it heavy and unclear. But years later, after having got some experience reading Pali, I got hold of the Pali version of the book, and I was surprised to see how clear and b...

Re: It is technicaly possible to revive Pali language?

Of course it is technically possible. See what happened to hebraic/ivrit. But you need a really strong motivation for many people in order to create the critical mass of language users necessary for making it a living language. Somehow I am not sure that motivation exists.

Re: Do monks speak Pali/Magadhi?

If you are planning to stay in Thailand for a while, I strongly recommend learning Thai. It is a very beautiful language, and since there are no declinations or conjugations to learn, it is very easy to learn some basic Thai.

It's just a nickname, nothing more. You can safely disregard his pet theories.

Re: Learning spoken Pali

Are there any resources for learning "spoken" Pali, i.e. conversation as it may have been used in everyday conversation? There is one book that I know: A.P. Buddhadatta Mahathera, "Aids to Pali Conversation and Translation", Printed and published by The Colombo Apothecaries, Co....

Re: Pali and Sanskrit: some history

Lance Cousins writes: "The standard epigraphical language used in the Gangetic plain and beyond in the last centuries B.C. and a little after was a form of Middle Indian rather close to Pali. We have no reason to believe that any other written language existed in that area at that time. Like P...
