Re: Sammāñāṇassa and Vijjā

Credit: To the venerable who doesn't want his name to be advertised  :namaste: Thank you SB and the venerable for your effort and taking time to answer these questions. This is a great way to obtain the help of monks who do not wish to involve with internet forums. :anjali: Yes, but I will n...

Re: Should online Bikkhus disclose their identity?

I voted 'No'. Because it's everyone's personal preference, not only bhikkhus'. However, I kind of like WT's color code idea mentioned here. Color codes can be done without revealing the actual names, and might solve certain issues raised by the OP of that thread.

Re: Anonymous (online) Bikkhus

I do not think that we can refuse giving alms individually to "unethical yellow cloth wearers"... you either give to all of them and only this gives you any merit (or to none). Everyone is free to decide but I don't support people who are there just for the sake of the belly and a cause o...

Re: Dhammapada an EBT?

Can you source this claim to the corresponding stanza from each side of the text? Can you establish linguistic precedence in the Hindu texts? It was my assumption that the Dhammapada preceded the Mahābhārata and Manusmṛti by hundreds of years? Which stanzas? Which Hindu texts? Evidence thanks . :po...

Re: Anonymous (online) Bikkhus

To recapitulate: this question was not about Bhante, this question was about specifically me avoiding Kammic repercussions when addressing any monastic naively in the wrong fashion on an online discussion forum. AN 6.63. Kamma is intention. Anonymous bhikkhu = no intention to address a bhikkhu in w...

Re: Anonymous (online) Bikkhus

"In times to come there will be members of the spiritual family merely by virtue of wearing ocher cloth around their necks; but they are unethical and of bad character. People will give gifts to those unethical people in the name of the Saṅgha. Even then, I say, a teacher’s offering bestowed o...

Re: Dhammapada an EBT?

There is a monograph by John Brough, called "The Gandhari Dharmapada". It clearly shows, that the text was fundamental for the Early Buddhist tradition. Acceding to Yin Shun, the text was not fundamental for early Buddhist tradition. It is not part of the four basic Agamas/Nikayas. Some D...

Re: Anonymous (online) Bikkhus

May be our DW Admins can create an option for color codes (bhikkhus and novices separately) for User name when a monastics register. That might inform lay members that this member is a monk, and also it's easy for bhikkhhus and novices when interacting with each other. Also, that might stop some no...

Re: Why don't we follow Noble Tenfold Path?

Seriously? This is what happened when you read DW straight after the bed :coffee:  I do not regret it. Ven. Dhammanando gave a very clear explanation. Perhaps Calling it Noble Tenfold Path could be a late addition. So in your opinion, the Right Knowledge and Right Release is a late ...

Re: Why right knowledge and right release only for Arahant?

Well, according to that sutta stream-entry comes first before everything, including sila. In most cases, as seen from the suttas, yes, it comes before one enters the Path. This is why this level is called "Stream ENTRY", where that very stream is the Noble Eightfold Path. You enter the pa...

Re: Why right knowledge and right release only for Arahant?

Jhāna and the Attainment of Stream-entry by Bhikkhu Bodhi seems well researched. He may have researched it to some depth, but to me it seems he's bending the suttas to suite his view. See below (perhaps you might see otherwise): It is noteworthy that the texts on the realization of stream-entry mak...

Re: Why right knowledge and right release only for Arahant?

...is impossible as how a common worldling and not even a Buddhist can achieve such a feat! What evidence is there Āḷāra Kālāma (who may have not been free from sakkaya ditthi ) was not free from sensual desire? You are talking about the possibility of Āḷāra Kālāma beeing an ariya, right?

Re: Why right knowledge and right release only for Arahant?

Kindly provide the reference/s for these. Thanks. As for suttas, need detailed googling, but have no time for that at the moment (except that famous Autumn sutta which clearly says that stream-entry comes first, jhana - later). Well, according to that sutta stream-entry comes first before everythin...

Re: Why don't we follow Noble Tenfold Path?

It appears you are correct actually. AN 10.103 talks about ten factors (8FP + Right Knowledge and Right Release). But the Chinese parallel only talks about eight factors (8FP). There is no ground to reject AN 10.103 because it is different to Chinese parallel. Seriously? This is what happen...

Re: Why right knowledge and right release only for Arahant?

1) Stream-winners and once-returners haven't mastered samadhi yet. 2) None of them ever get rebirth in rupa-loka realm (to be born there you must have at least 1st jhana). Kindly provide the reference/s for these. Thanks. The sutta you quoted lists the attainments of the four enlightened persons in...
