Re: Why so much hostility towards Baby Boomer Buddhists?
Extremist views are banned on this forum What is an extremist view? Generally it refers to views that blithely reject well-established facts. The views themselves may or may not be hateful, but they are always delusional. Such views seem like an innocuous theory, but they often aim at creating a na...

Re: Why so much hostility towards Baby Boomer Buddhists?
Sutta Central just announced new Anti-BDS legislation banning Antisemitism on their website. Fortunate you are not posting the above, there, to avoid the Gulag. I tried, but failed, to find this notice on https://suttacentral.net/. Could you perhaps provide a link. I find it strange that a site dev...

Re: Mantra in Theravada (aside from Buddho)
I believe that the practice of Buddhanusati used to be widely practised in Burma. The nine qualities of the Buddha were recited, and one bead of the rosary was rolled. These days people often used "clickers" instead of rosaries to do the counting. Just speculation... but the use of rosarie...

Re: Drinking Water in South & Southeast Asia
My first reaction to the heretical replies was "but... but... that can't be right!". So I did a search and it turns out that I've been labouring under a misconception for years.,, (granted it's a common misconception). I have been boiling tap water for 8/9 minutes and using that for making...

Re: Drinking Water in South & Southeast Asia
Water from wells can be drunk. If the water was doubtful, then I used an electric heater and a tin mug. If there is no access to electricity, you can boil on the fire. I have used this type of electic coil heater; but only to boil water for tea, and the water was already clean. The problem with try...

Here's a link to an interview the venerable did with Brian Ruhe on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2VeKZzQ Not an endorsement of any views expressed in the video...soley for the purpose of information. OK, maybe for entertainment a little bit. BTW I don't know if this has been hashed out on older forums, but...

Re: Laurence Carroll (U Dhammaloka). The first western Buddhist monk?
If we are considering possible anonymous Westerners ordaining based upon foreign presence in Buddhist kingdoms, then there were eight or so centuries after Alexander when Greeks were there in number.
Depending, of course, on whether ones definition of 'Westerner' includes Greeks.

Re: Can Theravada buddhist temple accept non buddhist donations ?
The title of your post asks one question, and the text of the post asks another. Regarding the first question only... in Burma it is not uncommon to see non-Buddhists making offerings to monks and temples.

Re: Where to find Luangpor Dhammavuddho's talks?
So I went to YouTube and found one of the venerable's videos. Beneath the video, and above the comments section, are a few lines of text. If one clicks on "show more" there is a drop-down of more text. In it are listed three source for more talks,.. one is YouTube (?), another is Facebook ...

Re: characteristics of ariya
Thanks santa... I looked at those suttas and it seems clear that the implication is that a being can consider him/herself a sotapanna if he/she, among other accomplishments, keeps the five precepts. An eel-wriggler might posit that after attaining the first path, the sotapanna might then not need ke...
