Re: Tipitaka protection act Sri Lanka

Thanks. I hadn't heard about this before. If anyone wants to Google the subject, you'll get more hits if you use the Sanskrit spelling: "Tripitaka Protection Act". There's a long and informative article in Ceylon Today : Those who oppose the Bill say that according to the Buddha’s teachings in the T...

Re: What is wisdom n compassion according to Buddha's teachings ?

I came across this in another forum , does this in accords with Buddha dhamma ? Of course it doesn't. In all the relevant suttas the position advocated by the Buddha is consistently complementarian, not egalitarian. Even AN 8.51, the sutta that Buddhist gender egalitarians most like to h...

Re: Monastics accepting medicine

If not would that disqualified his monk status after he took off his robe and put on the lay clothing ? No, it's not a defeating offence. If a bhikkhu temporarily dresses in householders' clothes because his robes were stolen (e.g. while bathing) it's no offence. If he does so for any other reason ...

Re: Monastics accepting medicine

This seems to relate to medicine offered which would include a vaccine. As BKh mentioned, there is a Vinaya rule that bhikkhus should conform to the wishes of kings, i.e., obey secular laws. There is also an exception to the rule in cases where the king's wishes are contrary to Dhamma. So what if b...

Re: Did Ven buddhaghosa really say in his visuddhimagga that in the end one should merge with the nimitta ?

if you think "Ven pa auk based his teaching on Visuddhimagga" then it is the cause for your confusion i think you should let go of that We have it on the authority of our member Ven. Subhūti (a veteran student of Pa Auk) that the sayadaw's meditation system is indeed a Visuddhimagga-based one. More...

Re: Paranimmitavasavatti Realms and Devas

1. In the Dhammacakka Sutta it mentions the Paranimmitavasavatti Deva. Is this the leader of the Paranimmitavasavatti Realms and does this refer to Mara the sentient being? No. The word is in the plural, so it is all the Paranimmitavasavatti devas who are applauding the first sermon, except (I supp...

Re: Population reduction

But did buddha give any sutta/prediction or indication of this time period of anything like this occurring. A great attack from mara, etc...? No. With the lone exception of the prediction made at the time of the founding of the bhikkhuni-sangha, the prophetic material in the canon never stipulates ...

Re: The Mathematics of Buddhaghosa

If you think he meant “rare” (which could mean almost anything taken out of context) then why didn’t he use that word? Probably because he was a brahmin before he was a Buddhist and the apprenticeship of his youth almost certainly included a thorough grounding in Brahminical rhetoric ( alaṅkāraśāst...

Re: The Mathematics of Buddhaghosa

BG (without a doubt) gives a “ball park figure” in the regard we’re all talking about. [...] Not “rare” (as if that would tell anyone anything). Rather, between 100 and 1000. Ie. maybe around 500. Quite literal. And quite intentional. As I already pointed out, this is a mistranslation. The figure i...

Re: Akkosa Sutta and kamma

Hello, friends. When talking about breaking the precepts, the Dhamma teaches that if you try to kill some being, for example, the bad kamma for you is bigger if the being actually dies. It makes me wonder: if someone insults another person, and that person doesn't take the insult, as the Buddha did...

Re: Did Ven buddhaghosa really say in his visuddhimagga that in the end one should merge with the nimitta ?

Base on this description, i think the merging nimitta is patibhaga, when there is no observing. Thanks for the clarification. Since the sayadaw doesn't speak of the delimiting or extending of the sign, I would suppose that his account is intended as a description of the earlier "method for guarding...

Re: Did Ven buddhaghosa really say in his visuddhimagga that in the end one should merge with the nimitta ?

Please quote the verse I ask this because Ven pa auk said one is expected to merge with the nimitta if I am not mistaken Ven pa auk based his teaching on visuddhimagga hence the question Could you quote the sayadaw's own words? The meaning of your paraphrase isn't very clear. For example, which nim...

Re: The Mathematics of Buddhaghosa

I have posted this previously here (or maybe I didn't) that the German translation by the Venerable Nyanatiloka makes it clear that the "mathematics" only apply to people with no jhana experience in previous life times. If the translation is correct, I'm not able to say. Thanks for bringing this up...
