Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Not at all, out of compassion we can look for solutions and that is what is being discussed. Of course, participating in News discussions and this sub-forum in general is voluntary, not compulsory. Am I generalising to say these shootings happen far more in the USA than in the rest of the Western w...

Re: Who are the (modern) protestant Buddhists?

Who are the protestant Buddhists, past and modern? To me, Protestantism is the doctrine based on false Biblical interpretation of easy salvation, i.e., via faith alone rather than by both faith & deeds. I think the Buddhist Protestants are similar, who take it for granted most faith believers will ...

Re: Bhikkhu Anālayo’s e-learning course on the Nibbana sermons by Bhikkhu Katukurunde Ñāṇananda

"Now the child has recognised the rubber ball not by the name that the world has given it, but by those factors included under 'name' in nāma-rūpa, namely feeling, perception, intention, contact and attention." "This shows that the definition of nāma in nāma-rūpa takes us back to the most fundament...

Re: Bhikkhu Anālayo’s e-learning course on the Nibbana sermons by Bhikkhu Katukurunde Ñāṇananda

Reducing nāma to "naming" is, I believe, to reduce nāma to just what it has become when it reaches satta - that is to say, when there is a descent of nāma-rūpa in saḷāyatana; and further, when nāma reaches satta proper. The word 'satta' only exists in the nidana (link) of 'jati' ('birth'). Can you ...

Re: "Emptiness" in the Pali Canon

What is the emptiness mind-release? There is the case where a monk, having gone into the wilderness, to the root of a tree or into an empty dwelling, considers this: ' This is empty of self or of anything pertaining to self .' This is the emptiness mind-release. MN 43 http://www.accesstoinsight.org...

Re: "Dogs do it better"

Referring to the point about Brahmins having sex only with non-brahmins, does this mean that it is better to have sex only with those in one’s caste? If so, does this have any implications for people who belong to an ethnic group that doesn’t have a caste system? Caste is not necessarily the same a...

Its a case of when politics falls outside of the sphere of Buddhism because the whole world can never conform to the Buddhist way of life.

Re: Patticcasamupada: wrongly explained by Buddhaghosa

"instead of saying 'formations'[in the plural] as in the Suttanta division, sankharo [a formation] is said in the singular. Why is that? Because it refers to single conscious moments. Thank you Robert for sharing your knowledge of non-sutta teachings. Similar to these commentaries, my impression fr...

Re: Patticcasamupada: wrongly explained by Buddhaghosa

I think it is probably useful to try to figure out what Buddhaghosa was attempting to say. 5 questions: Again: it arises as a togetherness (saha), thus it is a coarising (samuppáda); but it does so having depended (paþicca—ger.) in combination with conditions, not regardless of them. Consequently: i...

Re: Patticcasamupada: wrongly explained by Buddhaghosa

Looking at Paticcasamuppada - Practical Dependent Origination by Ven. Buddhadasa Bhikkhu (of Thailand) (now deceased). Ven.BD certainly had his views however what I have read today is too much for me to devote time too. This verse might need to be explained against accusations of eternalism: 287. T...

Re: Patticcasamupada: wrongly explained by Buddhaghosa

Greetings Javi, And as venerable Dhammanando mentioned, those theories that are not drawn from the suttas are pretty harmless. I beg to differ. The Visuddhimagga world-view is based at least as much on Abhidhammic concepts as it is Sutta ones , and against this background, it reinterprets suttas th...

Re: Patticcasamupada: wrongly explained by Buddhaghosa

Second comparison: Consciousness has the characteristic of cognizing. Its function is to go before (see Dhp 1). It manifests itself as rebirth-linking. MN 43 supports cognizing. Dhp 1 does not support consciousness as 'mano'. Where do the suttas refer to consciousness as ' re-linking '? AN 3.76 says...

Re: Patticcasamupada: wrongly explained by Buddhaghosa

We can use this thread to discuss where/if Buddhaghosa - the great Mahavihara Bhikkhu- taught the Dependent Origination wrongly. I have never read the Vsm before about D.O. & suppose it can only be compared with the suttas & other views. First comparison: “They form the formed” (S III 87), thus the...

Thank you, Paul. No problem. I think the Vsm on Dependent Origination alone can be critiqued based on the Pali suttas.
