Re: Differentiating Buddhism from Hinduism

Reading the Lotus Sutra allows me to do this, since it presents the Buddha as loving savior of all beings. The parable of the prodigal son, as contained in the Gospel of Luke, was originall...

It's also worth mentioning that Jimmy Dore was wrong about the Trump campaign having ties to Russia, while Rachel Maddow was right about it. Like some other Bernie supporters, he allowed his hate of Hillary Clinton to prevent him from seeing the Trump campaign's ties to Russia.

neo-liberal policies to protect their own incomes I'm sorry. When did Rachel Maddow support neo-liberal policies to protect her income? See the OP. She earns $7 million per year and has a net worth of at least $20 million. Champagne liberals tend to advocate socialist ideas for the masses and neo-liberal ideas for themselves. I don't think it's hypocritical for a wealthy person to advocate progressive policies. Someone can earn a good living w...

Re: Differentiating Buddhism from Hinduism
If Mahāyāna "rejects" caste, why didn't Indian Mahāyāna Buddhism reject castes? I am pretty sure the Buddha himself rejected the caste system, regardless of what came afterward. ...there are Mahāyāna Buddhist sūtrāṇi identifying tathāgatagarbha with ātman. Not all Mahayana schools interpret emptine...

Re: Mahāyāna Sutras?
Here is a simple way of describing the difference between Mahayana and Theravada scriptures. While the Theravada scriptures are written from the perspective of a disciple, witnessing the Buddha speak and act, the Mahayana scriptures are instead intended to help us see reality from the perspective of...

Re: Theravada vs. Mahayana
Since early Mahayanists didn't see themselves as separate and distinct from other schools of Buddhism, why should Mahayana Buddhists view themselves as separate and distinct today? There is also no evidence that Mahāyāna ever referred to a separate formal school or sect of Buddhism, but rather that ...

Re: Native Americans & Horse Culture
Seems like the rapid development of the use of the horse was due to the horse's utility which radically changed the standards of living for plains indians. It would be sort of like you and your ancestors only had mopeds and then suddenly a pickup appeared......boy what a spiritual connection that w...

Re: Differentiating Buddhism from Hinduism
Contemporary Advaita Vedanta and contemporary Mahāyāna Buddhism are very similar, largely because of their shared history, which I would consider a positive thing. Non-Mahāyānists may have a different opinion. Contemporary Theravāda and contemporary Hinduism though, that is a bridge I would not kno...
