Re: Where to find a monastery that does not bow to statues?

I was just curious. Buddha never said to bow to statues. Bible says something like, "Sorrow/Pity to those who bow to idols which cannot speak and cannot hear and do nothing for you in return. The lord is in his temple." :meditate: Again this is just a cultural difference. In israel bowing was more ...

Re: Where to find a monastery that does not bow to statues?

Some secular meditation groups maybe. Of the various temples ive visited the closest is the Dharma Bum Temple in San Diego. The teacher bows but not the students in the intro class. Problem is they are pretty one of a kind so unless you move there or happen to live there you're out of luck since you...

Re: Gender Equality Poll

It depends what you mean by superior. I think they are equal in terms of personal qualities overall. In terms of strength men are generally superior. In terms of social skills women are generally superior. Overall I'd say it balances it out. In terms of spiritual progress both are capable of the hig...

Re: Are women evil?

This Jataka was taught to a group of monks who were discontented with the celibacy side of the homeless life. To make matters worse, the monks' evil ex-wives were constantly sending them messages cajoling them to come back home. This is actually a good point. it depends on how you define "evil". Ex...

Re: Are women evil?

To be fair, the OP asked for Buddhist texts that say women are evil and jatakas are still Buddhist texts and I greatly enjoy reading them. Ignoring some of the things about the jatakas that make ppl skeptical of them as legitimate words of the historic Buddha, such as many jatakas having people spea...

Re: Are women evil?

Are there any Buddhist texts which specifically address ... women? Mātugāmasaṁyutta Linked Discourses on Females Mātugāmasaṁyutta SN 37 The “Linked Discourses on Females” contains 34 discourses regarding various qualities of women. Note that the Pali texts use two distinct terms for women, itthī an...

Re: Are women evil?

Ever wonder why the Buddha thought if the Bhikkhunis lineage was allowed, the existence of true dhamma will be shortened? I do not know why exactly. He gives analogies in the sutta where he says it will be shortened. It’s like those families with many women and few men. They’re easy prey for bandit...

Re: Are women evil?

No. The Buddha does however describe women as being obstructions/distractions to spiritual progress tho. He also describes men as obstructions/distractions as well, depending on who you are. So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery....

Re: Buddhist Schools

In premodern thailand all the schools were Buddhist schools cuz they were run by the temples. I think it depends. In the US i think its very hard to open a Buddhist primary school due to lack of population. And even among the Buddhists here the population is far less zealous than Catholics or Jews w...

E. A sympathetic husband: There are a number of conditions peculiar to a woman about which a husband should be considerate and to which he should respond with care and sympathy. They are: She must be parted from her kin despite her young age to live with her husband's family: the husband should mak...

Re: Ideal Wife

Doubt that. Visakha was a sotapanna at age 7. and got married and reproduced many times throughout her life far beyond the age of 7. According to what? Fables in commentaries? What evidence can you provide to support your absence of doubt? Does this absence of doubt qualify for stream-entry? Why wo...

Re: Ideal Wife

They probably attained the noble path after they finished with their instinctual lustful reproductive duties; which probably occurred prior to them learning about the Buddha-Dhamma. Women with such underlying enlightenment potential today would probably not get married & therefore not become a "wif...

Re: Abortion

The male female dichotomy on this debate is irrelavent. Not every woman believes abortion is right/should be legal and not every man is against it. Simplifying it to that is like saying all black people want to be NBA players and all east asians are good at math. Do women experience the world differ...

Re: Why so few Western Buddhists?

I assume the spike in case of USA is due to larger number of immigrants from Buddhist countries. Converted Buddhists are therefore between 0.2% and 0.4% (rough estimate) this actually isnt true. If you look thru pew polls Buddhism is actually the only major religion in the US where the majority of ...
