Re: How to reconcile time spans in the canon with history

Aeons (kappa in Pali) in Buddhism refers to beyond geological time. we're talking world cycles. So its irrelavent how long civilization on this world is. The Buddha mentioned in that story is supposed to have lived many world cycles ago in which the earth has been being created and destroyed and the...

I have no idea what you are discussing now.
Eternal citta in Theravada
Citta is a dhamma and all dhammas are impermanent.
chownah
No. All sankara are impermanent. All dhammas are non-self.

Re: Four continents

Where can I find the teaching on the four continents and Mount Meru? Ajahn Sona has a wonderful playlist on Buddhist cosmology on Youtube. In this one he talks about the northern continent Uttarakuru, the reason being there is more information in the suttas on Uttarakuru than the other 2 continents...

Re: if the age of the earth and other planets is less than 10,000 years old would is be compatible with buddhism?

but if it is,wouldn't that disprove the aeons in buddhism? No. because the Buddha said the world system and galaxies and galactic clusters are all impermanent and also go through a cycle of birth and destruction. So it doesnt really matter that much how young or old the earth really is. Technically...

Re: What resources exist dealing with the claim that Nibbana is the True Self?

In that case can u provide evidence that they "Fund" scholars who do this? I know they fund scholarships. That doesn't mean that those same ppl are the ones making the links to the various older traditions as you say. But as you said, even if they "funded" them that doesn't mean the work was comprom...

Re: What resources exist dealing with the claim that Nibbana is the True Self?

I'm also interested in this claim. scholars often depict Dhammakaya as having root in various marginalized traditions of Theravāda As all of the things I've read have only pointed to exactly one root, if any. Not various. So I would be very interested in what you've been reading that indicates vario...

Re: What resources exist dealing with the claim that Nibbana is the True Self?

Dhammakaya pays a lot of money funding many scholars who connect their innovative meditation practices and doctrines with various kinds of supposedly repressed, oppressed, and marginalized versions of Theravāda. The repression of "true" folk religion by sponsored "institutional" religion is an easy...

Re: What resources exist dealing with the claim that Nibbana is the True Self?

It seems to be a potpourri of tathagatagarbha, random bits of decontextualized Mahayana Buddhism, and New Age. There's elements of similarity in all of it. But based on the stuff I read it's more likely Phra Monkholthepmuni was influenced by the yogavacara tradition than Mahayana. Any such similari...

Re: What resources exist dealing with the claim that Nibbana is the True Self?

Since self is emptiness emptiness may be called "true self". Since nibbana is the unconditioned and as such cannot be different from emptiness many suttas may be interpreted as implicitly teaching nibbana as true self. However the explicit claim cannot be found anywhere in the doctrine. Your point ...

Re: What resources exist dealing with the claim that Nibbana is the True Self?

Given that most Buddhist scholars do disagree with that interpretation. I'd imagine its not hard to find. Read any scholarly paper on anatta and most of the time you will find the arguments people usually use against it.

Re: Trustworthiness of Early Commentaries

Not that I dont agree with this assessment. But in the Kalama Sutta doesnt the Buddha say not to believe in something just cuz its probable? Believing is done after studying and investigating the deep and ultimate Dhammas of a particular doctrine. Before studying and investigating, we need to choos...

Re: Dealing in poison?

Dealing in poison means like rat poison or things intended to kill. Not anything that just happens to be poisonous. Pickaxes can be used as weapons but someone who makes pickaxes would not count as dealing in weapons since they are intended for another purpose. You wouldnt be able to do much of anyt...

Re: rhinoceroshorn ordained

Wow, no 1 year probation? idk how that works It depends on the monastery. I believe in Sri Lankan traditions they generally require some kind of probation. Whereas in most Thai traditions there is no probation period or at least a relatively short one. Based on the photo it looks like he may be in ...
