Re: Source for the Pāli Canon in English

What do you all think of Jataka Tales by Ellen C. Babbitt? Online it says that this is the best 39 of 547 tales of the Buddha's former lives. Are there versions with all 547 tales included? Again, I'm going to generally recommend that you stay away from things over 100 years old. However, with the ...

The op said he is buying english translations of the texts- that means english language and english script. ... The ones from bdk are good translations, printed in very nice looking books, at a reasonable price, with the pdfs online for anyone to look at before they bought them. I think there might...

Parsing "hatthapādāna"

I'm asking this for a friend. No, really, it's for a friend. They want to know if hatthapādāna in this verse: “Jātassa maraṇaṃ hoti, hatthapādāna chedanaṃ; Vadhabandhapariklesaṃ, jāto dukkhaṃ nigacchati. could be split up as hattha-pād-āna and possibly end up with "hand, foot, and breath" Norman tra...

Re: Source for the Pāli Canon in English

This is the Pali discussion forum and you keep posting links to non-Pali scriptures. parallels - Yes, but the OP is asking about Pali. This is a Pali forum. You could be clear that you are not pointing people to Pali. Please just be explicit with what you are linking to when you are doing it in a P...

Re: Source for the Pāli Canon in English

I just ordered this version of the Iti-Vuttaka for $20. Though it is clearly one of the early traslations (1884), I hope it is one of the better ones. -Michael Did you do any research on this book? I've never even heard of it. Really, You ought to be staying away from translations that are 136 year...

Re: Source for the Pāli Canon in English

I come from a Christian background and, so, more or less, a Bible is a Bible is a Bible. I am glad to know that the same is not the case with the Buddhist scriptures. Ahh. That tells us what kind of Christian you were! Some Christians feel that the King James Version is the only one that god approv...

If it's not, don't be thrown off. Not all monasteries are geared towards English speakers.

Do tell us how it goes.

Here are nearly all the suttas in English, free and open-source, in PDF. https://suttacentral.net/downloads I don't think they have pdfs there. Only Vinaya and Snp. Here is a link to Bhante Sujato's translations as PDFs as well as many others: https://readingfaithfully.org/sutta-pitaka-e-books-epub...

Re: Revealing counterfeit Dhamma: Poems of Matty Weingast published in "The First Free Women" as a version of the Therig

At least to me, it appears sort of contradictory; where bhikkhunis may start to imagine their refuge is wealthy lay secular benefactors rather than the Senior Sangha. At least to me, it is so bizarre Ven. Sujato is engaged in a public campaign against a book his own bhikkhuni recruits inherently en...

Re: Revealing counterfeit Dhamma: Poems of Matty Weingast published in "The First Free Women" as a version of the Therig

I don't see anyone calling for book burnings. Just integrity in publishing. And criticisms have mostly been related to the actions of the publisher and authour, not people's character. It has been there a bit, unfortunately. I also fail to see how this relates at all to support for Bhikkhuni ordinat...

If anyone wants a detailed deep dive into the situation with The First Free Women, someone has written a very good account. It's long, though. https://lokanta.github.io/2021/01/21/curious-case/ Some highlights... In brief, Weingast’s book has been widely promoted and praised as being a new translati...
