Re: Translating "satipaṭṭhānānaṁ" in dative case ???

Isn't ending of origination the solution to suffering? Yes. But generally the suttas only say unwholesome things "originate". Satipatthana is not an unwholesome thing. Don't get stuck on words, think through them.... Your master Thanissaro himself said, similar to my good self:  This discour...

Re: Translating "satipaṭṭhānānaṁ" in dative case ???

Sam Vara wrote I don't think so, in that the teaching is of the origin and the disappearance of the four satipatthānas. Thanks Sam, now I feel a whole lot better. It appears Sam Vara did not confirm or support anything you wrote. Point of Samma sati is to wipe out the 4 main domains where the mind ...

Re: Translating "satipaṭṭhānānaṁ" in dative case ???

Admittedly Sujatho uses the word principles, (what does he mean by principles?)  Bodhi does not use the word principles, he uses phenomena. Bodhi said in his footnote it could mean "principles", such as the Seven Factors Of Enlightenment Phenomena is elsewhere translated as mind's objects. The word...

Re: Why are jhanas called earth-kasina ???

In visuddhimagga about developing the sign Thank you Auto. Very good (not that i believe it). :thanks:  138. When he has emerged from the first jhána, applied and sustained thought appear gross to him as he reviews the jhána factors with mindfulness and full awareness, while happiness and blis...

Re: What is your strategy for attaining Sotapattimagga & phala?

Chanda is necessary for the practice of Jhanas and thus towards Enlightenment as stated in Saccavibhanga Sutta delivered by Arahant Sariputta Mahathera. No. The Saccavibhanga Sutta does not say chanda is necessary for the practice of Jhanas and thus towards Enlightenment. The Saccavibhanga Sutta sa...

What is the 7th consciousness in Abhidhamma ???

Dear Abhidhamma expert/s The Vibhanga says: Therein what are the seven (types of) contact in the element of desire? Eye contact, ear contact, nose contact, tongue contact, body contact, mind element contact, mind-consciousness-element contact . These are called the seven (types of) contact in the el...

Re: Why are jhanas called earth-kasina ???

As you know there are many Kasina objects to attain Jhana. No, i do not believe in the above. As you know there are many Kasina objects to attain Jhana. The Vibhanga does not appear to say kasina is used to attain jhana. The Vibhanga described all four jhana as being or including "earth kasina". :f...

Re: Retrofuturist's Brief Sutta-Based Refutation of Abhidhamma

Common Abhidhamma Argument #1 - Mentality and materiality are paramattha dhammas (i.e. ultimate dhammas) Sutta Reponse: Never in the Suttas are materiality referred to as "dhammas". Dhammas are phenomena, whereas materiality is noumena. Instead, materiality is represented in the Sutta via mahabhuta...

Re: Hetu and paccaya

Should hetu be translated as "cause" or "condition? Is it distinct from or synonymous with "paccaya"? The Abhidhamma Vibhanga has the following passage: sabbaṁ rūpaṁ na hetu , ahetukaṁ , hetuvippayuttaṁ , sappaccayaṁ , saṅkhataṁ , rūpaṁ Therein what is the aggregate of form? In the suttas, the deva visited monks and Buddha. Devas can be seen; but not what you imagine devas to be.

Re: Those rejecting Abhidhamma Pitaka itself (regardless of commentaries) are not actual Theravadins (nor Vibhajjavadins

I bet those Arahants better than you. You lose the bet because Abhidhamma contradicts suttas therefore cannot be supported by any Arahant. I have made many posts showing how Abhidhamma contradicts sutta. You will know the bet is lost when it is decided to focus on the teachings rather than focus on...

so those suttas that describe the Buddha, Anuruddha, etc, hearing devas conversing when developing psychic powers or those suttas where Mara is intruding are really about schizophrenia?
