Re: Monks who talk politics

Maybe so, but that doesn't address the point I made. But this: instantiates my point quite nicely. You present yourself as a person who has connected the dots. Or as you have put it elsewhere, done the job, and attained nibbana. Whereas other people have not. And that's a form of virtue-signalling....

Re: Monks who talk politics

That doesn't seem to have any connection to my post, unless you can explicate the relevance. What do the coloured bits mean in this context? What are "this world and the other world", etc, and how do they relate to virtue-signalling? When you start grasping; DO is set in motion Maybe so, ...

Re: Monks who talk politics

I might be wrong, of course, but I thought that attaining nibbana required virtues; that the virtues (specifically, in Sīla, Samādhi , and Paññā ) were necessary preconditions. That it was impossible to attain nibbana without them. To paraphrase Kant, "who signals the end, signals the means&qu...

Re: Monks who talk politics

Heaven forfend, Peter! https://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?p=503515#p503515 Neither is my statement a form of virtue signalling, nor is attaining Nibbana, being the overcoming of all conceivings as mentioned a few posts earlier, a virtue. I might be wrong, of course, but I thought that attain...

Re: Monks who talk politics

I got the nuance you're trying to bring forward, so no need to get all superior on me, and I would have written a very similar reply as the one Paul already wrote, so he saved me from some work. Sorry for being so direct, but given what you do on online forums I have no choice but to keep some dist...

Which will eventually lead to virtue signalling Heaven forfend, Peter! Re: Monks who talk politics

:goodpost: Greetings, Well, the entirety of the dhamma is to get liberated from birth, aging, and death, by overcoming all conceivings, as mentioned in MN140; By overcoming all conceivings, bhikkhu, one is called a sage at peace. And the sage at peace is not born, does not age, does not die; he is ...

Re: Monks who talk politics

My view is that all aspects of life should be informed by Dhamma. I'm genuinely puzzled by the idea that we should separate "life" from "Dhamma". As I said, "Half of the eightfold path, has to do with interactions with others (thought/intention, speech, action, livelihood)....

Re: Monks who talk politics

Obviously liberation is the highest goal, but that doesn't make the other advice superfluous. It does if the monastic speaker/writer does not make any distinction - there and then in the very same talk/writing. The broader priority of liberation is not implied, especially in cases of a reader/liste...

Re: Monks who talk politics

Some years back Ven. Bodhi and Ven. Ṭhānissaro got into a contentious dialogue over whether war was ever justifiable. Their views on the subject were polar opposites. So which one of them was teaching Dhamma? That's why there was a discussion, a debate to help figure that out. It was never resolved...

Re: Monks who talk politics

This is absolutely incorrect. He did both depending on who he was talking to. I think you’ve lost the line between what Peter thinks the Dhamma is and what is factually stated in texts. I was of course talking about non-dhamma stuff, like politics. Of course he was instructing his students on the d...

Re: Monks who talk politics

Buddha taught the Dhamma for every individual to realize for themselves. He didn't taught how other people should behave. That is one of the many points where people go wrong. This is absolutely incorrect. He did both depending on who he was talking to. I think you’ve lost the line between what Pet...

Re: Monks who talk politics

Greetings, In this Dhamma we are to discern arising and how it gives rise to suffering. If there's questing for sources of dukkha outside of arising, then attention is misplaced. Indeed. So when a monk is engaged in politics, or is discussing politics, that is a big sign that the monk is not well v...
