Re: What exactly the meaning of Nirodha in Buddhism?

That is my exact question. I can understand cessation of ignorance and Sankhara and Vinnana But what is the cessation of Namra-rupa? Cessation is cessation of ignorance polluting Sankhara, Vinnana & Nama-Rupa. That isn't what the DO suttas describe though. They describe a progressive cessation of a...

Read Ajahn Chah. He got the point.

That's as good an entry point for a Theravadan as any.

Many thanks for this, SDC. ... Re: 📍A Teacher Named Araka, AN 7.74 (Week of June 13, 2021)

Many thanks for this, SDC. In terms of the similes, the most striking one for me is the cow being led to slaughter. The reference to a nasty brutal end brings it closer to home, as does the movement of limbs. The other similes are more about brevity, rather than a desperate struggle in the face of t...

Re: What is the meaning of "dhamma" in SN 47.42 ???

Since samudayo is the wrong path of craving and nirodho/atthaṅgamo are the right path of ending craving; how can there be the "samudayo" of satipaṭṭhānā? Note: Many suttas use the term uppāda (ud + pad)/uppādāya when referring to the "arising" of the Path rather than samudaya (saṁ + udaya)....

I guess the precept regarding incorrect speech, but depending on your motivation I would have thought it a very minor breach.

Dear Pali gurus Can the following sentence be translated in dative case (instead of genitive case)? Catunnaṁ, bhikkhave, satipaṭṭhānānaṁ [dative or genitive] samudayañca atthaṅgamañca desessāmi. https://suttacentral.net/sn47.42/pli/ms If so, what would the translation be? Dont tell me to imagine that hearing music = falling in to volcono... because it is not... How to really see dangers in sensual pleasures that lead to uprooting the greed for sensual pleasures rather than imagining them to be bad and teaching brain in that way? Far scarier than the metaphor is the ...

Gombrich might be a good place to start. In his paper Religious Experience in Early Buddhism (1997), he says that the general western understanding of the Buddha's enlightenment is that it was a mystical experience. He quotes William James on this, who thinks that mystical experiences in various re...

You and your clique haven't clarified anything. You have just strawmanned and run off because the kitchen is too hot for sophists! No, I've not run off, but I think this thread might be in need of an injection of new ideas. Yep. But not from you. Yes, I won't be adding any new ideas unless the tone...
