First, two questions: 1) do you have a link of this talk? 2) do you do much meditating?
I do have some thoughts on this, but it is noisy and distracting where I am, so I will wait. Perhaps some good answer will come along in the mean time.

Re: New forum: Dharma Paths Practice Community
Hi all, Just want to share some observations about dharmapaths.com. First, you can use a screen name if you really don't want to reveal your real name. Several of the most frequent posters do so. You can change to your real name when, and if, you feel comfortable doing so. Second, the forums are pri...

Re: What is the very first thing I should do?
:goodpost: This is my go to dhamma book. Very good. All the essentials are here, tied together with the narrative of the buddha's life. You can read a little of it each day, or a lot - the selection and presentation of the suttas allows you this flexibility. Another anthology to consider is "In the ...

Re: Things Worth Living For
1. My kids. They're the bedrock of my existence without which I don't know who I'd be. 2. An accurate sense of my scale in relation to the cosmos. This week my kids, my father, and I went camping in the mountains, up by a sleepy town trying not to go extinct. At the bottom of a valley nearby, beside...

Re: Is eradication of sexual desire the biggest sign?
It took 28 years after birth for me to reach my sexual zenith. Yesterday was my thirty-second birthday; I'm not the man I once was. If current trends hold true, I ought be enlightened in time for my 57th birthday, July 19, 2040. I'll be sure to let you guys know what that's like. SDC spits his coff...

Re: Absent member of our community
I'd sure like them to come back. Anna left in large part because of conflict with another member who has since left.
EDIT: it appears my memory is shoddy. Anna did leave in in response to all that divisive stuff.

Re: Is eradication of sexual desire the biggest sign?
Don't you think the sureshot way of guaging one's progress is to see whether one has terminated libido/sexual desire/sexual thoughts completely in one's self? Old men usually experience a decline in libido.....some see this as just the normal thing that happens since as the body ages it produces le...

it is indeed a problem of words, as I am not great at explaining subtleties...im not claiming to access the foundation of everything, but perhaps a foundation of certain phenomena. whereas there may be further foundations and further foundations reaching the foundation of nirvana. perhaps another p...

It maybe a deep stillness that OP is obtaining, but unless it is skillfully produced it is likely to be a hindrance in the long run.

Re: Advice Appreciated : ]
The elevation of stillness to some kind of foundational element makes it sound like some 'ground of being' sort of thing, which is not accepted withing theravada. Perhaps that is not how you actually see it, and instead this is a problem of words only. The buddha instructed us to see things as condi...

Re: booze for friends
If you often have friends over, consider putting these things in a box and labeling that box "free to take home for those who drink". Set it at the door through which they leave. Any that are left after a month can then be drained into the sink guilt free as you will have long ago rescinded any owne...

Re: Canadian Newcomer
I consider myself a Buddhist who believes in God(and I have a good connection with God). So maybe you'll find that connection for yourself someday. Thanks for the welcome. For me, the search and longing for a God without finding one brings sadness. Technically wouldn't it be safe to say that the lo...

I literally laughed out loud at that last turn!Bhikkhu Pesala wrote:This dilemma is brought up in the Milindapañha too. The Buddha never quit if there was anything that could be done. If the time was not yet ripe to teach, then he waited. If his disciples did not respond to instruction, he killed them.

Re: Who's sutta pitaka translation do you favor the most?
Ven. Bodhi's for sure. I really like his approach - not too much from himself, and not too much literal Pali translation as well. More than that, I received his personal blessing to translate all his texts into Russian and I've already finished this work - all three nikayas , which took several yea...
