Re: lice

Another variation of this question is whether you'd kill termites if your house was infested. I personally would get the house treated. I'm guessing the OP would let the termites destroy their house?

Re: How Do I Choose The ONE path When I Get So Much From Many Paths ?

Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him: “Ānanda, are all precepts and observances, lifestyles, and spiritual paths fruitful when taken as the essence?” “This is no simple matter, sir.” “Well then, Ānanda, break it down.” “Take the case o...

Re: Making a video game

I don't think I can change the direction of the game. It's already decided and it's more my friend's project that I'm helping out on.

Making a video game

Do you think making a video game is a bad idea? We all know how addictive video games can be and they're ultimately a distraction/escape. I'm currently working on making a game with a friend to refresh my programming skills, but I think the plan is to eventually sell it in the app store. I have mixe...

Re: What is the purpose of observing eight precept for lay ?

Wouldn't one of the reasons be to deepen one's meditation practice?

How much entertainment should we allow?

Three days out of the week I abstain from music and watching TV/videos for entertainment. However, those other four days I'll indulge in entertainment and I feel like it destroys all the mental ease I may have established by abstaining from these things. I wonder how much music/tv do you think I sho...

Re: Monks and following rules

That's a good point about the different time zones. Yeah, I'd feel weird questioning the Bhante about him eating after noon time. Who the hell am I to be questioning him? I mean, I'm just a lay person...I'd feel so out of my place doing that. There was never anything secretive. The monk was actually...

Monks and following rules

I know a highly revered monk who radiates kindness and acceptance. He's someone I admire, but I notice that he can be flexible with rules. For instance, I saw him eating after noon time, since he was at an event where the lunch was served past noon. Also, he's told of stories where he'd shake hands ...

Re: Making fermented drinks

One thing I will say, I seem to have broken the precepts a few times during holidays when my sister brought desserts with alcohol in them and I'd eat them. I had this happen a few years ago at Christmas. I got a box of chocolate candies, and the first one I bit into I immediately knew had rum in it...

Re: Making fermented drinks

One thing I will say, I seem to have broken the precepts a few times during holidays when my sister brought desserts with alcohol in them and I'd eat them. I have this paranoid belief that she was trying to get me to consume alcohol, because she knows I don't, but maybe I'm just being paranoid...and...

Re: Making fermented drinks

Effort The Vibhaṅga defines drinking as taking even as little as the tip of a blade of grass. Thus taking a small glass of wine, even though it might not be enough to make one drunk, would be more than enough to fulfill this factor. The Vibhaṅga does not, however, indicate how offenses are to be co...

Re: Making fermented drinks

Are some of you saying that even if a drink contains 0.05% percent alcohol, which is safe to serve even to a child, then you're breaking the precept if you drink it?

Making fermented drinks

I'm planning to experiment with making fermented drinks. I've heard they're good for your gut health due to the probiotics, but I'm nervous about the drinks potentially containing too much alcohol in them. I first plan to try making kombucha, which only has 0.5% alcohol. That's the same amount non-a...

Re: Against the stream centers shutting down

I feel like if you're a teacher of Buddhism you have to have impeccable behaviour...that's why I could never be a teacher. Yeah, it's a shame to lose all those teachers and it sounds like a lot of good was done by the center. But still, something was obviously wrong there too. Especially co...

Re: Against the stream centers shutting down

Yeah, there was someone in my country that was somewhat high profile that got caught up in #metoo stuff when he was accused of sexual harassment by a women. In the end, I think they found no evidence and I honestly found it hard to believe this guy was guilty. Other women came out saying he was good...
