Revealing counterfeit Dhamma: Poems of Matty Weingast published in "The First Free Women" as a version of the Therigatha

I'm surprised that this topic hasn't come up here yet. Shambala Publications has published a book of original poetry and passing it off (quite successfully) as a version of the Therigatha. If you look at reviews on Amazon or on Goodreads , you can see that the majority are thinking they are reading ...

Re: Bhikkhu monasteries that support bhikkhuni ordination?

While I can see the value in not ordaining at a monastery that actively opposes ordination of women (like Wat Metta), in general it is not going to be a good way to know if the monastery will be good for you to ordain at. One distinction that can be made is the difference between monasteries that su...

Thanks so much for reporting back!

Good to know about MMB. Sorry you had a bad experience. Hopefully the paypal report will lead to the shutting down of their payment gateway.

I also meant to remind folks to absolutely check in with the monasteries you are thinking of visiting. They may have their own policies. They may also have some inside info since they probably have contacts at the immigration office.

Re: Sri Lanka|Thailand|Myanmar|Malaysia: lastest news on opening to foreigners

Here is a link to an article that isn't behind a paywall: https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/sri-lanka-will-reopen-to-tourists-next-month-%E2%80%93-but-they-must-stay-for-at-least-two-weeks/ar-BB1bJviZ?li=BBoPWjQ Some good news in the article, maybe. Looks like 6 month visas will be available. How...

Re: Please help me join a monastery

The monastic routine is usually quite rigid, with most monasteries getting up at at least 4 in the morning and not going to bed until after 10 at night. Senior monks have more latitude but as a junior bhikkhu you will be expected to follow the schedule exactly. This is true for "good" monasteries. ...

Re: Is 'Seven weeks after enlightenment' included in Tripiṭaka?

The period after the Buddha's enlightenment is covered in the Vinaya. The Great Chapter is great to read: https://suttacentral.net/pli-tv-kd1/en/horner-brahmali https://www.ancient-buddhist-texts.net/Texts-and-Translations/Mahakhandhako/index.htm You can also find parts at the beginning of the Udana...

Re: Expense on the path to ordination

I wouldn't save anything for if you decide not to ordain. That way you might be saving for a looong time. This is a really tricky one and it depends on the individual and how many non-cash resources they have. It's not good to be stuck in a living situation, especially a monastic one, just because ...

Re: Did mogollana actually travel to hell to save his mother?

Isnt it his mother n same life? Proof? No, it's not. http://www.palikanon.com/english/pali_names/sa/saariputta.htm Sāriputta died some months before the Buddha. It is true that the account of the Buddha's death in the Mahā Parinibbāna Sutta ignores all reference to Sāriputta, though it does introdu...

Re: Did mogollana actually travel to hell to save his mother?

It says right in the article you quote that a story can be found in the Petavatthu. Here it is: https://suttafriends.org/sutta/pv2-2/ However, he does not travel to hell, nor is his previous mother in hell. She is a ghost and comes to him. Sharing merits with beings in hell doesn't do anything for t...

Re: Ajahn Brahmavamso's Dark Jhana

Following a slight tangent in this thread... Anyone who goes to the monastery of a "big name" teacher and expects to sit at their feet every day is a bit naive. Or even have regular, open access to them. It's a very understandable misunderstanding. Of course there are places where this is the actual...

If his mom is in the US or Canada, she can go to any drugstore and look for Nitroglycerin Pill Holders. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Nitroglycerin+Pill+Holder&ref=nb_sb_noss_2 They are like what is posted above and should be quite small. They will be airtight. Some Burmese monasteries are quite ... ex...
