Re: Sri Lanka|Thailand|Myanmar|Malaysia: lastest news on opening to foreigners

"Sri Lanka declared safe for travel by World Travel and Tourism Council" https://newsin.asia/sri-lanka-declares-safe-for-travel-by-world-travel-and-tourism-council/ Could be totally meaningless, but I guess it's a good sign. The article only talks about the certification and not anything the govern...

Re: Vibhanga vs Patimokkha

So, you know that they have their own discussion forum where you are much more likely to get a precise answer to your question? Although at the moment they aren't registering new users. https://discourse.suttacentral.net/ In the Pali tradition, the Patimokkha as a document with only the rules (as re...

Re: Where To Ordain

Going back to schisms, it seems to me a lot of these worries are more prevalent on internet forums than in real life. The teachers who favour suttas, such as Vens Analayo and Sujato certainly don't dismiss later (according to historical and textual analysis) texts as useless. In fact, Bhikkhu Sujat...

Re: Did the Buddha Ever Visit Sri Lanka?

There is plenty of evidence in the Tipiṭaka that the Buddha used his psychic powers for travelling to distant places. The reason that his alleged visit to Sri Lanka should be rejected is that it is not mentioned in the Tipiṭaka, its Commentaries, or Subcommentaries. It is only mentioned in later wo...

Re: Did the Buddha Ever Visit Sri Lanka?

Lots of off topic stuff!!! If you want to discuss the possibility of psychic powers in general, please start a new thread. Maybe the mods could move those posts to a new thread. :offtopic: (I'm actually not as mad as the fellow in the emoji, but I would love it if the original topic could be respect...

Re: Theravada buddhist millionaire

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuang_Yen_Monastery In November 1975, the Buddhist Association of the United States (BAUS) leased 125 acres of land in Putnam County from Dr. C.T. Shen (one of the co-founders of BAUS and late Vice President of BAUS) for the development of Chuang Yen Monastery. Accordi...

Re: Did the Buddha Ever Visit Sri Lanka?

Whatever it says in Other Books, whether that be ancient Pali books, or books by contemporary authors, should be compared with reliable sources. If it agrees with them; it should be accepted. If not, it should be rejected. Bhante, But the suttas don't say that the Buddha didn't go to Sri Lanka. Rem...

Re: Sri Lanka|Thailand|Myanmar|Malaysia: lastest news on opening to foreigners

It's fine. Nothing will stop me from ordaining. Sadhu sadhu! I wasn't implying that these would be a barrier to ordination. Just that if people are trying to figure out what financial resources they will need, they should probably plan for a bit more to accommodate extra health insurance. At least ...

Re: Sri Lanka|Thailand|Myanmar|Malaysia: lastest news on opening to foreigners

Sorry I don't have a source, but last year (pre-covid) Sri Lanka started to require proof of health insurance for long stay visitors. I would expect this to only get more strict and that the health insurance policies fully cover covid treatment. I wouldn't be surprised if this became a broad standar...

Re: Did the Buddha Ever Visit Sri Lanka?

If some claim is not supported by the Dhamma/Vinaya, it should be rejected. This is from the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta: Well, this isn't at all a matter of Dhamma. In the text you quote it says "This is the Dhamma, this the discipline, this the doctrine of the teacher." I hardly see how a visit to Sri ...

Re: Did the Buddha Ever Visit Sri Lanka?

I asked the initial question because I do not wish to make any claims that are contradicted by reliable sources. I do not regard the Mahāvaṃsa as a reliable source. Well, absence of proof is not proof of absence. (although I get why people feel that way) Because of our various backgrounds we will a...

Thanks! I'll give it a try. BTW, I don't think fuzzy means what you are using it for. https://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/fuzzy-search The fuzzy search on the DPR let you ignore diacritics, and if I'm not mistaken, also ignore the aspirated consonants. It may have even ignored double consonants...

Re: Can this forum be considered a Sangha?

I personally have benefitted by reading such statements and finding sutta explanations often available on the webs, while some explanations made by forum friends were very clear, thankfully. Often with finding relevant suttas. Absolutely. My point was just that it's not appropriate to consider the ...
