Re: Eternity

Why speak for others? I'm not. I'm repeating what those other religious people propagate and openly present in clear terms, and adding nothing of my own to it. They are speaking for themselves. You can’t possibly know what they mean or the depth of their insights. Yes, I can. They make the meaning ...

Re: Eternity

Ok…..what is the part of human being that does not die(subject to annicca)? I think you are playing semantic games. As I made clear earlier, I have no opinion on what parts of what beings may or may not die. I am pointing out that your idea of the soul being eternal is an assumption that is not sha...

Re: Eternity

Oxford dictionary: soul 1. the spiritual or immaterial part of a human being or animal, regarded as immortal. Immortal is eternal. No, it's not. You would have understood better if you had thought about my earlier comment, especially the bit about Catholic orthodoxy. "Immortal" means that...

Re: Eternity

I was going by the dictionary definition, as well as discussions with some religious folk. The consensus is the soul is eternal. Sure. You just happened to have a few friends from different Christian denominations around for coffee when you read my post, and then Googled the term for the benefit of...

Re: What makes Theravada conservative?

Maybe not in the political sense, but what makes it conservative compared to other sects like Zen? I think a main reason is the importance given to canonical texts, along with a deep respect for lineages and particular teachers. The practice does not encourage experimentation and deviating from est...

Re: Eternity

If soul is defined as eternal, then how can you equate it with atman? For the avoidance of confusion, we might need to ask who defines the soul in this way. Most Christians don't believe that the soul is some sort of substance that is coeternal with God, existing forever outside of the flow of time...

Re: Eternity

Yes, but isn’t this semantics. If religion has and is being used to divide man then doesn’t it make sense to translate words to create seemingly wall like differences? Atta and anatta is really the human(egoic) structure of a mind and body that is in constant change. The being portion added to huma...

Re: The Right to Refuse Donation

:anjali: Dear All, Thanks for the answers. However the question is not about time to eat or kind of flesh. It is about how a monk react to donation of dirty money. For example: 1. Donation from a corruptor who get the money from corruption. Does a monk should refuse or accept food or robe bought wi...

Re: Do we need to make an effort to control or should we not try to control our breathing during meditation?

Some people say, in meditation we need to make an effort to make our breathing subtle, deep and slow, while others say we shouldn't try to control our breathing, we should just observe it. What is your opinion on this? There are lots of different meditation methods, and I personally favour one that...

Re: The Right to Refuse Donation

What is wrong with lion meat? Why must a monk refuse lion meat? It’s highly uncommon but is there a physical reason the monk “must” refuse this meat? The Mahāvagga (Mv.VI.23.9-15) forbids ten kinds of flesh: that of human beings, elephants, horses, dogs, snakes, lions, tigers, leopards, bears, and ...
