Re: Point of focus for anapanasati

IBy the way, anyone experience slight to strong pulsations on the skin areas, can be online face, on the arms, on the neck, back or shoulders due to meditation? What is that? That's the sensation of the flow of blood. You can connect the pulsing say in your arms and hands compared to the beat of th...

Present Moment and Time

In terms of meditation did the Buddha actually discuss time and the present moment? I've read inferences about the past and memory with sati and also present moment from sampajanna (as well as arguments against) but I've heard so many times people talking of the essence of Buddhism as present moment...

Re: American Exceptionalism

Considering the number of non-returners and stream-enterers that hang out in this place, I take it that national pride is a fetter which isn't let go until quite late on the path... I'm reminded of the story a family friend has that their family when fleeing Eastern Europe as refugees on bo...

Re: American Exceptionalism

In my mind, it felt like an indirect reference to what is currently going on in The Gambia probably while getting whipped up by the excitement of the inauguration:

Re: I never will be enlightened - The Triumph of Narcissism: Theravada Buddhist Meditation in the Marketplace

Narcissism is a very strong word probably used as has become quite a fashionable diagnosis to make in the media and a touchstone that listeners can relate too.

Probably more appropriate to say self absorbed in most cases especially in this context.

Re: The Unconscious

Thank you for your posts.

Would I be right in thinking that in psychological/psychotherapeutic thinking, understanding the unconscious helps to bring insight into suffering whereas Buddha taught the opposite?

The Unconscious

What did Buddha say, if anything, about what modern psychology and psychotherapy considers the unconscious and the relationship that it has with conscious thinking? I've been reading about different theories of the mind and wonder how they are similar and contrast with that of Buddha's teachings in ...

On another note:
SarathW wrote: Yes we have all Vitakka,(thinking) Vicara,(thinking) Pithy, Suka and Ekagata all in first Jhana.
Leigh Brasington points out that there is not ekagata in the first jhana http://www.leighb.com/jhana_4factors.htm

I'd be interested what the counter argument to this is...

Re: You need tranquility and insight to do jhana?

My understanding is that Thanissaro suggests that Buddha meant meditate when he said 'do jhana' The word he uses for going to meditate is “to go do jhana”—jhayati is the verb in Pali So when Thanissaro says below that: the Buddha himself said that you need two qualities to do jhana properly The impl...

Psychotherapy

I'm thinking about starting psychotherapy training and was wondering if anyone had any information on the relationship between Buddhism and psychotherapy (not western mindfulness).

Thank you in advance.
