Re: Jhana

hard jhana person is right if the moment last very short time. Some call it a blimp or going out or something like that a'la practioners like Daniel Ingram, i don't know who thought out this term. Sounds unsubstantiated. Visuddhimagga, 18. Herein, (i) What is the attainment of cessation? It is the ...

Re: Canonical defnition of jhana

Just some thoughts (as I understand) Regarding the 'vitakka' factor in the first absorption. Does it mean 'thought', as its normally used in the English language? I tend to think of it this way. Its the same force, same capability that directs one's awareness on some stream of thought(usually unres...

Re: first jhana really can be this easy (35 sec. video demonstration)

According to Buddhaghosa, the probability of anyone reaching immersion through nimitta kasina is 1 in 100,000,000. For real. 1 in one thousand can’t reach the learning sign. And so, on. I’d love to find the passage, but my love affair with Buddhaghosa ended a long time ago. Thanks Ghosa, for all th...

Re: first jhana really can be this easy (35 sec. video demonstration)

There is no need to repeat discredited smears of Ven. Buddhaghosa. Indeed, those who say such things are literally lying by this point, unless they are extraordinarily ignorant and do not yet know that the copyeditor's colophon is clearly not Ven Buddhaghosa's. This has been discussed to death on t...

Re: Are the Jhānas the Buddha learned from his teachers before enlightenment the same as the ones he taught after it?

If we're playing the conjecture game... doesn't it seem implausible that the Bodhisattva was ignorant of the four jhanas while he was spending his years striving... only to connect with them from a memory as a child? It is you who plays a conjecture game here when you say that, not your interlocuto...

Re: Are the Jhānas the Buddha learned from his teachers before enlightenment the same as the ones he taught after it?

You didn't say 'following on'... but you definitely implied that others had established foundations of sila and samadhi that the Buddha 'added to'. I don't see how your sutta references are actually relevant. It seems the Buddha perfected the annihilationist project by removing its one defect. Ther...

It's just your belief, and Ceisiwr's belief that Visuddhimagga jhāna is "correct" (so Buddhaghosa must be an arahant).
It’s not a belief. Regarding if he was an Arahant or not, I have no idea. I do disagree with him on a few things.

BrokenBones wrote: Thu May 13, 2021 1:39 pm Buddhaghosa was not an arahant... he even wished for a good rebirth (although apologists will say that the wish was put in by someone else).

Re: Are the Jhānas the Buddha learned from his teachers before enlightenment the same as the ones he taught after it?

It appears that other, well-developed, ascetics were already at that point, so could awaken with a small amount of instruction. This would help explain why some people seemed to just automatically get what the Buddha was saying and awakened on the spot. They had already developed virtue and the Jha...

He wasn’t the first to seek out Nibbana either. It seems Nibbana was already in currency as a concept, which I take to mean a still mind...

Could you provide a quote? Sure: When he said this, Nigaṇṭha Nātaputta looked up at his assembly and said, “See, good sirs, how straightforward this householder Citta is! He’s not devious or deceitful at all. To imagine that you can stop placing the mind and keeping it connected would be like imagi...

Re: Are the Jhānas the Buddha learned from his teachers before enlightenment the same as the ones he taught after it?

Where does the Buddha say he learnt 'jhana' from the previous teachers? They taught 'spheres' of perception which do not necessarily need the four jhanas as a prequel. As far as the Suttas are concerned, the four jhanas are only ever presented as a teaching from the Buddha. Spheres of perception an...

Re: Canonical defnition of jhana

... You aren’t entirely wrong per se. Letting go is a ceasing of activity, so it’s not a building up of activity. Vitakka-vicara are intentions to let go, of renunciation (Right Intention). The Jhanas are states of letting go which is why the ascetics of DN1 (the ones at the end), who were also loo...
