Re: Can we attain Jhana while we have a sexual relationship?

Hi, The Jhana fixation is a problem that still afflicts me, but I think that it is for good reasons. As we can read in MN14: “I myself, before my self-awakening, when I was still just an unawakened bodhisatta, saw as it had come to be with right discernment that sensuality is of much stress, much d...

Re: Can we attain Jhana while we have a sexual relationship?

if i lie on bed and think of lustful scences in my mind and enter in to doing xx in thoughts, do u think it will be impossible to enter jhana the same night in same bed in same sleep posture? I don't know the specific answer to that. Probably not. But I also think obsessing over jhana is probably j...

Re: Can we attain Jhana while we have a sexual relationship?

Personally I think it's these kind of questions that highlight the problem with Jhana fixation. People study the suttas and hear Dhamma talks about these states of meditative absorption and think "wow that sounds amazing, I need to try to get some of that in my practice!" And then they might hear, a...

Re: devas visited indian people ancient time but not now?

ancient time in india both in hindu as well as buddhist tradition, devas visited them to tell even small matter but now no one sees them nor deva appear before them voluntierly. why is this ? There are lots of possible explanations from all different kinds of world views from sceptical to believer....

Re: Fourth precept question

I don't think its a problem. The system exists to prevent underage people form purchasing alcohol (and also yourself from being penalised for selling alcohol to underage people) if someone is clearly over the age of 21 then its unnecessary to ask for their date of birth. You're not deceiving anybody...

Re: corrupt view of arhants ability by non arhants

Is it even physiologically possible to stop anger from ever arising? I agree that an arahant would never get angry. They wouldn't pick it up, identify with it, and get embroiled in a story about it. I don't think it's necessarily the case that they never experience anger arising in their field of aw...

Re: Do we have an idealised image of Nibbana and the Buddha?

I've never understood the state of enlightenment to mean that one's is no longer subject to getting annoyed or not having preferences and such. The Buddha was visited by Mara many times after his awakening. The defining factor is that the Buddha recognises Mara and thus can act with wisdom rather th...

Re: buddo meditation

Yes, I have practised it both in conjunction with anapanasati, and on it's own as a mantra. I can't speak for whether it would work for everyone, or whether my experiences with it are universally applicable. In conjunction with the breath, I didn't find it added to or subtracted from the meditation....

Re: Sense restraint

Hello, I have recently discovered that the Buddha was right about sensual pleasures. They are harmful. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on practicing sense restraint? How should I avoid watching television? How do I stay in one room all day? Thank you for listening. Generally when we have add...

Re: idle chatter and irritation

... I think we mostly agree. I don't think avoidance is bad. I don't drink so I avoid bars. I don't try to go to bars to strengthen my ability to not drink. Likewise I don't go to spend my time with people who annoy me with their idle chatter. However since irritation is the main thrust of what the...

Re: idle chatter and irritation

You could devote a lot of energy to NOT avoiding people, but that strategy isn't going to stop ignorance and being annoyed by people is only a 'micro-manifestation' of ignorance. It doesn't really address the issue when you waste your time with confronting a 'micro-manifestation' of ignorance when ...

Re: idle chatter and irritation

Sure, but putting aside the work environment which has been your main argument, I'd suggest to take the simplest way in all other situations which is avoidance. Because from my perspective it is not about "own preferences and desires" but about practice and following the Buddha's advice to associat...

Re: idle chatter and irritation

While that might be an appropriate hypothesis one might want to analyse whether one should or should not connect with these people and whether one should or should not get involved in interactions with them. This is true of course, but as per my first statement, sometimes you cannot avoid it. If yo...

Re: idle chatter and irritation

these days if someone comes to me to talk idle chatter, i dont want to talk. but i also get irritation to be among those people. is there anyway i dont feel irritation as I cant hide from the world. I think the first thing is to realise that it is a completely unrealistic expectation that people do...
