Re: Hindrance

Hi Bodom, I suggest that you have a good coughing and throat-clearing session beforehand, perhaps followed by a swig of water, and then restrain yourself during the sitting. As the bhikkhus of old restrained themselves: "Again, venerable sir, being a head-anointed noble king, I am able to have ...

Re: Need a translation

Hi again,

Another possibility occurred to me: it could be saiya in the sense of 'sleeping', in which case it might mean verses that one chants just before retiring to bed.

Re: The teachings of Bhikkhu Buddhadasa

Hi Element, One question I have: do you happen to know the provenance of Ajahn Buddhadasa's conception of "dhamma as duty"? Is it something that he attempts to ground in the Suttas? Or is it based on a lexical analysis of the word 'dharma'? Or a borrowing of the normative sense of 'dharma'...

Re: Why ?

Hello Joop, Thanks for dropping in. I'm not sure that is possible in this forum. I can be a bit sectarian to me. And I'm not sure also Modern Theravada (that's for me: Buddhism without Buddhaghosa) is possible here. As the previous posters have noted, it is our intention that this board be s...

Hi Manapa,
Manapa wrote:What food is actually mentioned in the suttas and Vinaya?
In the case of the Vinaya you'll get a good idea from Ven. Thanissaro's exposition of the Food Chapter in his Buddhist Monastic Code.

No, I haven't heard of the book or its author, but I should be interested to hear more when you've finished it. Or even as you're reading it, if you should chance across anything of interest.

Re: Help please - Fortune Telling

Hi Craig, While this refers to things the buddha doesnt do it still applies to lay people as well as the bhikkhus. As stated they are wrong livelihood, thus engaging in them breaks a part of the Noble Eightfold Path, Right livelihood. The Sutta doesn't say that: the issue is right livelihood for a h...

Re: Entering the stream

Hi Element, It does not mean that a sotāpanna does not think at all about past or future lives. Dhammanando What you have stated clearly contradicts the quote, which states: "Not running after the past" or " running into the future". What I stated accords with the commentarial un...

Re: Rūpaṃ, bhikkhave, anattā...

Hi Piotr, Why in Pāli it is said "rūpaṃ anattā, [...] viññāṇaṃ anattā". And not "rūpaṃ anattaṃ, [...] viññāṇaṃ anattaṃ"? In this passage 'anattā' = 'na' + the substantive 'attā' + an assumed copula (atthi): "is not self". When 'na' is made into the first element of a co...

Re: AN 11.13: Mahanama Sutta (six recollections)

Hi Mike, It used to seem odd to me to see my name, and how much I donated that month, on the noticeboard at the local Wat amongst the other names (mostly in Thai), but I think Patrick is right that some of us do a disservice to ourselves by being embarrassed about dana. And to others too, for the wh...

Re: Entering the stream

Hi Element, If one was a stream enterer, they would not consider "I" will have seven more lives. A stream-enter would have supramundane right view, as expressed below: "When a disciple of the noble ones has seen well with right discernment this dependent co-arising & these depende...
