Re: Identity View
Hi auto, .. Hi Roberto It is an attainment you can get from following a certain technique. More importantly a concentration on the psychic center in the middle of the head somewhere, which result in unmoving awareness or utmost stillness what has awareness. It also involves stopping the breath(to c...

Re: Identity View
Well one of the qualities is awareness, but as the Buddha said awareness always arises with a condition. Since it arises and ceases, it can't be a Self. You can say it exits beyond experience, but then you would be talking about things no one can ever know. There is awareness what is already there ...

Re: Identity View
If there really is a Self or not is a different matter really to what the Buddha taught. The Buddha taught there was no-self to be found. If you agree with him or not is up to you. Its one thing to disagree with the Buddha. A lot of people did and still do. Its another to change what he said. self ...

Re: Identity View
A convention, which people make into a substantially real thing by grasping. The Buddha was denying a truly existing self (sakkāya). Yes, if you have not found the self. Because you don't know what you talking about. If there really is a Self or not is a different matter really to what the Buddha t...

Re: Identity View
To stop grasping things as self, which is the origin of your view. Grasping. What is self? you said there is no such thing. A convention, which people make into a substantially real thing by grasping. The Buddha was denying a truly existing self (sakkāya). Yes, if you have not found the self. Becau...

Re: Identity View
This sentence doesn't also say that the self doesn't exist. It says it isn't found or established as truth. If a self existed, then it would make sense to say "belonging to myself". It doesn't make sense to say "belonging to myself", therefore... Why is there this teaching, “Men...

Re: Identity View
It says the body is not a self, and there is no self apart from the body. So, there is no-self. As the other sutra says "However, there is no self; there is nothing that belongs to a self; [all this] is empty of a self and empty of anything that belongs to a self." you failed already with...

Re: Identity View
.. There is the Self. The small self is what is conceived if the true Self is not known. ‘All sensual pleasures are impermanent, suffering, and perishable.’ ‘sabbe kāmā aniccā dukkhā vipariṇāmadhammā’ti. Saying this, a brahmin speaks the truth, not lies. Iti vadaṁ brāhmaṇo saccamāha, no musā. But t...

Re: Two Types of Jhāna
Only the superior Jhana has no other sense contact like sound. Which is used as the golden example. But practically speaking most people are not able to get this superior Jhana. What Visuddhimagga says is that the consciousness, in 1st jhāna, doesn't occur by way of the five doors. Also the percept...

Re: Two Types of Jhāna
Auto... maybe you could clarify what you're trying to say and perhaps use 'relevant' sutta references to make it clear to an idiot like me. Commentaries and their dozen or so grandmas is of little interest to me when we have a large portion of the Peerless Ones Dhamma readily available. No need to ...

Re: Two Types of Jhāna
What is "object-scrutinising Jhāna"? "Jhāna is twofold: that which (views or) examines closely the object and that which examines closely the characteristic marks. Of these two, "object-scrutinising" Jhāna examines closely the devices [e.g., Kasiṇas] as mental objects. Insi...

Re: Learning and counterpart sign comparing with some other description
It's always a pleasure to see the nuts & bolts of the Buddha's Dhamma discussed so enthusiastically. Even if I have to intentionally blur my focus to do so. Have you tried watching stereo images? There will 3D image appear once you get the eyes, focus correct. Also it is kind of different from ...
