Re: Why Theravada?
If you're going to quote me....please do me the courtesy of making sire you're accurate? I did not quote you, nor did I claim I was quoting you. I said, "Here's my summary of this thread, how it looks to me". Then I said, "This kind of question is I think inherently rude". I sta...

Re: Initiation of foreigners?
Say that I want to get out of the country and live somewhere else and go to practice mostly unimpeded? Is there a place you can go to practice and work at the same time? Like a place to work for your living expenses and training that would be accepting of a foreigner? Why not ordain? How do you mea...

Re: Why Theravada?
If it can be categorically proven that the Theravada is [X} then the Mahayana Schools will have to concede that they are [Y]. I think your (and my) spiritual life would be simpler if there was only one teacher to follow and all other teachers closed up shop and went home. Somehow I don't think that...

Re: Rebirth
It may or may not be worthwhile to point out there is no such teaching of "rebirth". There is rather the teaching of "again birth". As in "after death there is once again birth". And we practice for the end of "birth". It's maybe a subtle thing, or perhaps no ...

Re: Why Theravada?
Up until the point when Kusala posted that Venerable's video, people have been expressing their opinions. But once there is a public statement by a Venerable who dismisses an entire Buddhist tradition as having no taste of liberation... No where in that video does the monk "dismisses an entire...

Re: Why Theravada?
This thread started out as asking "why Theravada". People have been giving their honest answers. This last day or so of posts, however, seems to include some people getting defensive about some of those answers and arguing the efficacy of non-Theravada schools. This would seem to me a] off...

Re: Faith-based against evidence-based
Buddhism is nothing other than practical things such as how do you reach Enlightenment. How do you know this? As someone told you so and you believed it? As from your personal experience? This is the strangest question I have heard in a while. This is so upside-down it is baffling to me. My earlier...

Re: Why Theravada?
This Venerable is spreading his delusion. Could you be more specific as to which part are delusion? When he learned Theravada he was unhappy with what he had learned in Mahayana. Do you have reason to believe he is delusional about his own feelings on the matter? He wrote about Vinaya, the practice...

Re: Faith-based against evidence-based
He looked to me as he was very knowledged of many aspects of Buddhism, something theoretical of which I am not much interested about. When you discuss about practical things, such as, how do you reach Enlightenement, you basically get no straightforward answer. Buddhism is nothing other than practi...

Re: Faith-based against evidence-based
For "evidence", I mean some lasting attainment You keep saying or suggesting nibbana is the only lasting attainment taught in Theravada. This is not so. Theravada teaches four levels of lasting attainment. The highest level is the arahant who has attained nibbana. The lowest level is call...

Re: Recreational Use of Cannabis
What I would ideally like to come up with is an alternative to the puritanical reaction one receives when discussing this sort of drug use within a religious context (I'm pretty sure having wine over dinner isn't going to cause one to be reborn in Hell.) Such an alternative response would come in t...

Re: Faith-based against evidence-based
I have looked back over this thread - the initial post, Matteo1972's various replies - and have a new answer. "What proof do we have that the teachings of Buddha actually bring you anywhere important?" There is no proof, Matteo1972, that you will accept. I'm sorry we don't have what you ar...
