Re: The meaning of "rupabhava" & "arupabhava"

Correct your understanding of Rupa, in DO, My understanding is correct, as follows: “When one abides inflamed by lust, fettered, infatuated, contemplating gratification, then the five aggregates affected by clinging are built up for oneself in the future; and one’s craving—which brings renewal of b...

Re: The meaning of "rupabhava" & "arupabhava"

Rupa is the images created in the mentally proliferating state, it is mental. The suttas do not say this. The suttas say rupa is the four elements, as follows: “Rāhula, the interior earth element is said to be anything hard, solid, and appropriated that’s internal, pertaining to an individual. This...

Re: The meaning of "rupabhava" & "arupabhava"

Venerable Sāriputta said, "bhavanirodha nibbānaṃ." It is too general to specify that suffering "includes" bhava. I am placing you again on ignore. Oh dear. Possibly someone else can help you. :| "And what is the noble truth of the origination of stress? "From ignorance...

Re: Are most Western monks trolls?

Is there any evidence to suggest that "casual sex" specifically prohibits stream-entry? If it lead to stream-entry the Buddha would have praised it. In DN 31 & SN 4.55, the Buddha obviously included "sexual fidelity" within the sphere of "ethics" or "morality&...

Re: On the Necessity of the Abhidhamma

wrong approach. You have to appreciate that Abhidhamma and Sutta are complemented eachother. Abhidhamma is wrong approach. Whatever you do with ignorance is Sankhara. It is simple as that. Sankhara in Dependent Origination is not volition. Volition arises at namarupa. This is how I experienc...

Re: On the Necessity of the Abhidhamma

I am not sure what you mean here. I recommend to read the Abhidhamma. For example, the suttas say about bhava in Dependent Origination: Katamo ca, bhikkhave, bhavo? Tayome, bhikkhave, bhavā— kāmabhavo, rūpabhavo, arūpabhavo. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhavo. https://suttacentral.net/sn12.2/en/sujato ...

Re: On the Necessity of the Abhidhamma

The way I understand Sankhara in Abhidhamma is what is arising in your mind. 50 Cetacikas It appears you have not read the Abhidhamma. About sankhara in Dependent Origination, the Abidhamma says the Suttas teach the following: 1.2. Definition of (Volitional) Processes Herein, what is ‘with ignoranc...

Re: The meaning of "rupabhava" & "arupabhava"

With love :candle: Dear Pulsar. To read more about "becoming" or "bhava", refer to Ajahn Chah and his loyal monks, such as: ''Becoming'' ( bhava ) means ''the sphere of birth.'' Sensual desire is born at sights, sounds, tastes, smells, feelings and thoughts, identifying with the...

I would try calling the ghost a "troll" and have a temper tantrum. This seems to be effective. :alien:

Re: hindrances and jhana factors...can they coexist?

Ānāpānasati Sutta says rapture is experienced while knowing breathing. This appears to not be jhana but appears to be what the Commentaries called "neighbourhood concentration". To add, the suttas appear to say jhana only has five or less factors of experience. The breath is not one of th...

This is a literal fact. It is not a theory. Merely read the Vibhanga . :reading: The Abhidhamma says: 1. Suttantabhājanīya 1. The Section Derived from the Discourses 2. Abhidhammabhājanīya 2. The Section Derived from the Abstract Teaching https://suttacentral.net/vb6/pli/ms "Kammabhava" &...

Re: The meaning of "rupabhava" & "arupabhava"

You could just as easily and clumsily say "All suffering includes bhava" and then cut-and-paste the formula for dependent origination, colouring the word "bhava" red as if that proves a point. Even then, it would not mean that bhava and suffering "mean the same thing."...

Re: On the Necessity of the Abhidhamma

I'm not interested in your "theories." But what I wrote is a fact and not a theory. It is literally written in the Vibhanga that the Abhidhamma had its own unique idiosyncratic view of the Teacings. This is a literal fact. It is not a theory. Merely read the Vibhanga for yourself. :reading:

Re: Translation of Kusala, Akusala, and Abyakata

Dhammapada says: 311. Just as kusa grass wrongly handled cuts the hand, even so, a recluse's life wrongly lived drags one to states of woe. Kusa is a type of grass that cuts La means "cutting" So "kusala" may mean "cutting the grass that cuts" or that which removes what...
