Re: Mind & body

Please "present" to others where and what is the "mind" ?
I've proposed that mind = viññāṇa + certain saṅkhāras.
When a person is in coma, where is the mind ? Is a person in a coma still "conscious" ?
Not sure, anyone here know?

Re: Modern Theravada description

5. All Buddhist traditions are not only vehicles toward complete perfect enlightenment but that they can teach each other. I'm not getting how this notion is supported by your quote. What does that quote have to do with Mahayana practices, for instance? 9. One can interpret the planes of existence ...

Re: Mind & body

I think if anyone can give you a definitive answer to this age old question then they would win a prize. So I was reading Bhikkhu Bodhi's version of the Abhidhammattha Sangaha and came across this by accident: "According to the Pali commentators, the heart serves as the physical support for al...

Re: Mind & body

"Mind" is a collective term that covers all mental aspects incl. consciousness. So then mind = viññāṇa + certain saṅkhāras? It's a fantasy of eternalists not compliant with Buddha Dhamma. By this I simply meant viññāṇa. I worded it poorly. Some of us had a long discussion on a related que...

Mind & body

The teaching on the 5 aggregates separates form (rūpa) & consciousness (viññāṇa). So what is the Buddhist view of the relationship between mind & body? What is the difference between viññāṇa and mind? How should we regard the evidence that there is a strong connection between what is called ...

Re: Interested in personal blogs (and participation) of monks, nuns, Buddhist experts

This makes zen easier to false claim of achievement, and this is quite popular in zen. Talk is easier than done, and zen creates a loophole for wrong doing, which is a dangerous trap. That why the Buddha didn't teach zen, bc he would not create an unclear path. I have spent some time studying &...

Hi everyone, can anyone recommend any good online meditation retreats, courses, or one-on-one training options for meditation or dhamma study?

instill in me certain qualities they don't teach me at school such as leadership, team work, discipline, working under pressure, as well a good fitness habits. If you rely on someone else to form your character, what will you do when that person is gone? What will you do when you're in a different env...

Re: Buddhism for the beginners

why we perceive as this or that?
Fundamental ignorance and conditioning.
Why do we perceive at all when all perception is imaginary?
I see nothing in the suttas or in the abhidhamma that supports this claim.

Re: Buddhism for the beginners

I have read the relevant section. The text states that ultimate realities... exist by reason of their own intrinsic nature. These are the dhammas: the final, irreducible components of existence... Such existents admit of no further reduction, but are themselves the final terms of analysis And conven...

Re: Buddhism for the beginners

according to b. bodhi´s commentary on abhidhamma ´tree´ and ´fish´ are "mental constructions (parikappana) acc. to Theravada abhidhamma philosophy, not realities existing by reason of their own nature." My understanding is there is nothing in the Abhidhamma that denies the existence of wh...

Re: Why Meditation Doesn't Work For Many People?

What I am saying is Samath does not lead to Vipassana but Vipassana may lead to Samatha as well. The way the Buddha taught these things was to regard them as qualities of the meditation experience. He never said "Go off to someplace and do vipassana." It's only in more recent times that w...

Re: Why Meditation Doesn't Work For Many People?

Samatha does not leads to Vipassana.
They are two different things.
My understanding is that they can be developed concurrently. If I'm not mistaken, there's a sutta passage on that...
