Re: Did mogollana actually travel to hell to save his mother?

It says right in the article you quote that a story can be found in the Petavatthu. Here it is: https://suttafriends.org/sutta/pv2-2/ However, he does not travel to hell, nor is his previous mother in hell. She is a ghost and comes to him. Sharing merits with beings in hell doesn't do anything for t...

Re: Ajahn Brahmavamso's Dark Jhana

Following a slight tangent in this thread... Anyone who goes to the monastery of a "big name" teacher and expects to sit at their feet every day is a bit naive. Or even have regular, open access to them. It's a very understandable misunderstanding. Of course there are places where this is the actual...

If his mom is in the US or Canada, she can go to any drugstore and look for Nitroglycerin Pill Holders. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Nitroglycerin+Pill+Holder&ref=nb_sb_noss_2 They are like what is posted above and should be quite small. They will be airtight. Some Burmese monasteries are quite ... ex...

Re: understanding pali alphabet

I have been told that the traditional Sanskrit order is slightly different from the traditional Pali order. Back when the Pali English Dictionary was written (probably the dictionary you refer to; it would be helpful if you could be specific) most scholars had started with a background in Sanskrit a...

I was guessing it was for tattoos. If that's the case, can't go wrong with a lotus.

Re: help with a mother's request

For some examples, search google images for the Thai phrases. For "benefitting his mother" google search, I see at least 3 different postures. 20-10-22.jpg As to the OP, you can probably explain that Theravada Buddhism doesn't have lots of symbols for things other than the Buddha, enlightenment, or...

My favourite Samyutta are:
I think that the OP is using the term Saṁyutta to refer to the chapters, not specific suttas.

Two most favorite are Kosala Samyutta because they are very practical, and Anamatagga Samyutta because it is so important for understanding Samsara.

Re: Dictionary of Pali Proper Names editions

E.g. on these pictures the pages are translucent. You can see the printing of the other side of the page. Like in the Bibles you mentioned. But the binding itself looks like a good quality one. If it's an old edition, the see-through could actually be because it was printed with real printing type....

Re: Dictionary of Pali Proper Names editions

Too bad the PTS edition is no longer available. That binding was good. FWIW, I find Motilal Banarsidas to usually be of poor quality binding. But I think you may find that there are even differences between printings from the same publisher. As long as it's a stitched binding, you should be able to ...

However, the pronunciation of palatal consonants (ṭ vagga) is mostly ignored... I don't think this is the case. Sinhala still very much has those two sounds (palatal and dental). I find that the palatal spoken in Sri Lanka is not as extreme (i.e. far back) as that used in Hindi. But Sri Lankans can...
