Re: Betting on Obama's Speech

Here's a long-shot, perhaps 1 million to one:

(After finishing the speech or after being sworn-in): I am a man of faith . . . now which way is Mecca ?

 Just kidding.

Re: should there be a modern theravada

I like Individual's analysis, but prefer it to remain the first two options, not the last three. There should not be any new 'branches' set-up. It sounds too schismatic. Fortunately we don't have any Pope or Vatican in Buddhism, so there can be some minor differences of opinion and we can all still ...

:hello: Welcome. Western Zen (I think) is somewhat similar to "Modern Theravada."

Re: Hi a real newbie / Money and World Peace

Welcome! I'm not sure if one world currency will really solve any of the major problems, but you never know! You will still have several countries indebted to others, still have poverty, widespread inequities in wealth, etc. Neither socialism nor capitalism has solved anything up to now, so don't kn...

Re: Some of the smileys don't match up.

I corrected the problem. Some of the smilies had the same code as similar ones, as retrofuturist said. It should be all fixed now. Let me know if there are any more glitches, and any smilies you would like to add.

Re: Buddhism and sexuality

I heard someone ask S. N. Goenka once, "what do you think of homosexuality?" Goenka's response was, "homosexuality, heterosexuality, it doesn't matter, it is all sexuality, all things that need to eventually be transcended."

Re: Buddhism and Women

It probably was a result of the status of women at the time in northern India. I believe some of the commentaries state that the extra rules were to allow for the Dispensation to last longer. It may have been to please the male dominated society. Or it could have been a test of the resolve and deter...

This is the first I've mentioned publicly that the book will be online later this year. It will be much larger and more importantly, completely free, as an online edition.

AH, ok, I should have figured that one out. Great acronym for Access to Insight. Yes, they have a good list over there and there are a few others out there. My online edition coming out later this year will have 500 lists , taken from Anguttara Nikaya, the other Nikayas, the Vinaya, the Abhidhamma, ...
