Re: Kalama and Udakka did not know Rupa Jhana

Yes, Ven. Sujato is 100% correct. Buddha was searching for a clue, for a hint, and found it (jhana in childhood). He could have also said "Ah well, so Alara and Uddaka were on the right track". And indeed, these two were the first whom he decided to teach right after enlightenment.

Re: Kalama and Udakka did not know Rupa Jhana

Buddha's teachers attained jhanas, simply because all jhanic attainments are progressive and one is built upon another. See SN 36.11, for example. AN 9.35 explains this well too.

Re: Disrespecting Vipassana

I’m really confused about the amount of people on this site that Seem to disrespect Vipassana(Goenka). Is it a case of people not understanding the teachings of the Buddha Vice versa. Goenka tries to pack all path factors into one - that is - satipatthanas. This method is simply wrong and doesn't w...

As for subj:
My wife said, this movie was the exact copy of her life, heh.
Guess so many could say that as well -)

Abhidhamma is not a Commentary on MN, so it does not explain it.

Re: Seven Stations of Consciousness

He thinks that "the seven stations" of consciousness are the earliest Buddhist teaching
The earliest, probably, are the lists in SN 14.11 and AN 8.120.

Re: Is meditation necessary for stream entry?

I've been obsessed with sotapanna lately and am very interested in hopefully reaching the first stage of enlightenment (which is widely believed to be available to laity). I'm new to Theravada, so I'm very, very sorry for any mistakes here. Is rigorous practice necessary? Hello. Stream entry is not...

Yes, you're right; he is lucky or his good kamma came to fruition, as many never see justice in this life.
I'd say his bad kamma ended.

Re: How does a Buddhist practitioner knows whether he has attained the first stage of sainthood know as Sotappan.

There must be some way that the practitioner will know for himself Arahant knows. Others just guess. Buddha gave "Dhamma mirror" teaching for one to check if he's attained at least stream-entry. The very fact that he taught this confirms one does not know for himself if he has attained on...

Re: Keeping a cool head in times of hatred

I feel terribly upset by the current news of daily atrocities over the last two months. If I were upset by misfortunes happening to me, I would not hesitate to refer to Buddhist teachings on how to deal with that. But in the case of other people being slaughtered and hundreds of thousands losing th...

Re: Why five cords and not six cords of sense pleasure?

You also delight in thought Delight in a thought is a pleasant mental feeling (somanassa), not bodily. And sensual pleasure is a bodily feeling (sukha). You can't get sukha just dreaming and thinking about it. Quite otherwise, eventually you'll get domanassa, unpleasant mental feeling, if you will ...

Re: Why five cords and not six cords of sense pleasure?

Since there are six sense bases?;one can also fantasise in the mind to derive pleasure right?
Because mind - mental phenomenon contact cannot produce pleasant bodily feeling, which is that very sensual pleasure.
You can dream about sensual pleasure, but you can't get one without bodily contact.

Re: How do you radiate mettā?

Not sure why, but I have a hard time imagining ‘radiating’ mettā in six or ten directions, or in any direction at all, above, below, across and so on

Do you have any advice for this?
Because this is jhanic description. You can't do that unless you are in.

Re: Finding love as a buddhist

I think its the sheer vastness of the corpus that made me think so. But if this is not the case, I accept it. Frankly speaking it is not that vast as one may think. If you remove all kinds of iterations and filter out only unique information, you'll be left with a book or two. However, iterations s...
