Re: How much money is needed to travel to Thailand for ordination?

2. Departure ticket to show to immigration around 50$ for example to Malasya, (they didn't check mine and actually they didn't check much, they just let me in and said goodbye) Generally, although proof of onward travel is listed in requirements for immigration, the only one who will check is the a...

Re: Is it possible for me become a monk if I have schizophrenia?

While hearing voices is the main diagnostic criterion for schizophrenia, lots of people hear voices and are able to live a normal life. Strangers on the internet aren't going to be able to tell you if it's a problem. It would need to be something that you discussed with the community you hoped to jo...

Re: Confessions, concealments and charges

You really ought to do a full study of the Vinaya before even attempting these sorts of questions. If you had, you would know that there are numerous rules that can be broken unintentionally (e.g. eating unoffered food). So it is very possible for arahants to both commit and confess offenses. As wel...

Re: Clothing for monastery visits

You may have a bucket in the washroom assigned to you and be able to hand wash cloths daily. The trick is timing the drying. If the monastery doesn't mention specific clothes to pack, then what you list should be fine. You could probably make do with two white pants and one off white. I'm sure peopl...

Re: sutta location help

Also I’m looking for the sutta that says one should first define pleasure (or happiness?) and then pursue that. Does anyone remember this https://suttacentral.net/mn139/en/nyanamoli?lang=en&reference=none&highlight=false I got that one with a simple search on SuttaCentral. The search is und...

Re: sutta location help

Also what does everyone in the forum think about this idea of creating a specific sub-forum for help finding suttas Personally, I exclusively read the forum through the "Active Topics" page, so putting them in a sub forum would have no benefit for me. I believe that the only reason at thi...

Re: Sri Lanka Tourist ETA/Visa Questions

It wouldn't be unreasonable to ask the places you are planning to visit if they have up to date information about extending tourist visas. If they have any information it would probably be accurate. You might just want to mention that you are not asking them to sponsor you, just if they know about t...

Re: Mahamevnawa, Nissarana Vanaya, Na Uyana Questions

3) I saw a video of chanting at Mahamevnawa on YouTube and it looks like they recite their chants slowly, in song, and alternate between Pali and English (other videos in Sinhala). Is it typical to recite chants in song form and to alternate languages (at Mahamevnawa or in general), or was this don...

Re: Bhikkhus and taxation

Wow. What a massive derail this thread has been. The OP has a valid question. Too bad it wasn't kept on topic. In the United States, clergy is eligible for a tax free housing allowance. So even if the lodgings provided by the monastery/temple counted as income, it wouldn't count towards taxable inco...

mjaviem wrote: Fri Jul 14, 2023 9:18 pm I think DN Suttas are too large for oral tradition. No one can recite any of them from memory. They must have been assembled.
It was the job of the bhanakas to memorize entire nikayas, not just individual suttas. Don't impose your own limitations on those of people in the past.

Re: Sutta Central search function

The search function on SuttaCentral.net (as of July 2023) is still experiencing rapid development changes. It's being redesigned completely. So I would expect things to keep changing for a while. It wouldn't surprise me if the dictionary feature got ditched since normally one would be expecting to g...

Re: Help finding a Sutta

Thank you Bhante, although I am fine with this now. My initial post is 8 years old :jumping: That's hilarious. Honestly I thought it was a bit odd both that you would be asking this question and that no one actually answered it. This is definately one thing that modern forum software handles better...

Thank you so much bhante. Please can you tell me how I find it in the hard copy of the AN (Bodhi translation) and if possible how these sutta references work? It looks like no one has answered your question. 2023-06-27 07_52_53-The Numerical Discourses of the Buddha_ A Complete Translation of the A...

Re: Monks/nuns Footwear Vinaya

https://suttacentral.net/pli-tv-kd5/en/brahmali gives footwear related rules. There is a common interpretation that if something is allowed for a sick monk then it is also allowed for a monk who would become sick if they didn't follow the allowance. Of course not everyone will agree with this in all...
