Sallekha Sutta:Personal Goals
The Sallekha Sutta is one of my favorite suttas in the Majjhima Nikaya as the refrains "others will be x we will be y" are wholesome and motivational goals. I was hoping maybe someone can help me grammatically change them from first person plural as a Self Motivator for me before I begin m...

Layman's Handbook of Dhamma
I once remembered there was a book that detailed a lot of the Buddha's teachings for a layman which was not like the Patimokkha but it was also very instructive about the Buddha's positions on the morals and good character required of people in lay life. I know of the Sigalovada sutta but that is on...

Re: Types of Kamma
I remember a Venerable saying If one urges another to kill, condones killing, or speaks in praise of it, and if someone else kills that person due to one’s speech, then one is guilty of killing, just as if one had done it with one’s own hand. The actions are Doing the killing oneself. Prompting or t...

Types of Kamma
I recall hearing about the impact of kamma in some text but I have forgotten the kinds of kamma in referral to both the pali terms for them but also the kinds of kamma and I'm hoping for a refresher. This is not asking about the niyamas (because I remember those), but about the measure of kammic imp...

Re: Need for privacy in restful garden
Thick plant cover does wonders for soundproofing and shielding an area from onlookers. The thicker the shrub/hedge the better. They work better than fences because they completely block sound that would be carried on the wind, and they often grow thicker with every pruning done right. Taking good ca...

Re: Need for privacy in restful garden
I've been doing the exact same thing. A couple things you can do depends a little on the amount of privacy you want and the amount of space you have. For example where I live, I can plant flowering quince hedges (zones 4-8) and I have a crape myrtle tree. These are easy at keeping things private bec...

Re: Protective Chants - Parittas
This will give you a very decent idea of how they worked and when they worked in the past. Some of them have explanations before them with "Introductory Verses" As for why they work, it's really uncertain. Most sacca-kiriyā work in this same way. The necessary requirements for Parittas to...

Re: Are negative events always the result of bad kamma - i.e. abuse done to children, rape, etc?
There's many reasons for things happening, but the Buddha does describe them as generally being about 5 things. Weather (utu-niyāma), the laws of physics and chemistry. Seed (bija-niyāma), or the law of biology. Mind (citta-niyāma) – the law of psychology. Dhamma (dhamma-niyāma) – the law of reality...

Re: Cautious about practicing consistent vipassana with mental health issues?
Doing intense meditation is fine as long as you are consistent with your medicine, and see your therapist regularly. The same trouble that one can have with meditation can in fact happen to anyone, primarily because meditation is not an opiate or a sedative, it's a laxative. It's a purgative. It get...

Which is why I pointed it out. It would be mean to imply Dylan is against the job when he's against the philosophy. Scientism is something he seems to consider a danger.

He seems to be less distrusting of the job itself than the philosophy (Scientism).

A bit sad really.
But maybe it's because we just live in a world where people don't trust one another.
