Re: Can other religions contain eightfold path?

If another restaurant had KFC's blend of herbs and spices for cooking fried chicken it would be a KFC. Similarly, Jesus's students brought complaints to him that outsiders were being seen healing and other miracles in his name. They wanted Jesus to tell them to stop, but Jesus said they were all on ...

Re: Do what i do depends on what happends in the surroundings?

I think it was specific to Yoga, possibly the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, that environment is stronger than willpower. The point of the teaching was that if you are not in a good place then leave.

Re: philanthropy and dhamma

When I was back in high school I took my bicycle to go to the library. The weather was dark and cloudy, but I really wanted to go and I thought it was going to be a few hours before it rained. I was wrong. There was a Cadillac involved. A surgeon had to put a metal rod in my right femur. The next da...

Re: Poll: the most difficult precept for you?

Often I wish I could go to bed and just never wake up again. Even bad dreams aren't as difficult as real life.

Re: Ethical Trading as Right Livelihood

A regular job is gambling. They can be hard to get and hard to keep. We have all worked for companies that use people like toilet paper, right?

Re: forex trading and buddhism

Do the best you can to take care of yourself. If you give up and make other people do it for you, they are likely to be far more practical than you would be. On the other hand, you know how much you honestly need to be able to live your life and work your path.

Re: Bodhicitta

It's like the thing with the airplane. We lost cabin pressure and the oxygen masks have dropped. Put your mask on first. I have heard all kinds of teachings on bodhichitta and it always seemed like it was about refusing to wear a mask until everyone else has theirs on first. I just wish more people ...

Re: Bodhicitta

Remind me, would you? Wasn't the Lotus Sutra the transition to Mahayana where they say the Hinayana doesn't have the new Sutras because they were too cowardly to stay and listen? Even Arhats?

Re: Bodhicitta

It always seemed strange that everyone on the Mahayana has to vow to individually save everyone from Samsara. I'd think they would work together. Like I'll get these fifty here, you get those fifty there. And why hasn't the one assigned to push me into Nirvana showed up yet?

Re: Relaxing the neck (and keeping the body erect)

Mewing was mentioned in the book "Breath" by James Nestor. It talks about the relationship between correct breathing and the structure of the head. It was in the context of how processed food is entirely soft, as opposed to requiring chewing and exercising the muscles of the jaw. Mewing was describe...

Re: should I marry or be single?

Being married is hard work. You would be including someone else in your life and it can't be just about what you want to do. Worse if you have children. At least become a Stream Enterer first and see if you still want to do it.

Maybe we should limit this to asking for people who have had problems after getting vaccinated. For people like me it is just an opinion either way.

Re: Lists to memorize, which ones should be required?

My mp3 player can hold a lot of Dharma. Same for book shelves. Getting it into my head in a way that will help me to live it is much trickier. I'm in my mid forties and back in school they didn't ever really teach me how to learn. It was about holding on to content long enough to pass tests without ...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

Any specialized diet costs more money than just eating the same things as everyone else around you. I don't make enough money to be vegetarian. The funny thing is that the only job I had which gave me the option of eating vegetarian food was in a research lab. My job required regularly killing mice ...

Re: Bodhicitta

Bodhichitta is one of those words that means different things depending on which branch of Buddhism it is discussed in. The Mahayana version is the most general. It is the desire to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of "all mother sentient beings". Because on a long enough time frame everyone has be...
