Re: Is everyting predetermined?
Macroscopic objects average out microscopic quantum uncertainties and probabilities to accomodate a somewhat satisfactory "determinism" that appears in the visible "Laws of Nature." For the purpose of simplifying physics - to allow mathematical and logical methodologies like dif...

Re: Culadasa : An annoucement from Dharma Board
. there should be a rule which prohibits layman to teach Dhamma. You would kill the dhamma if you made that rule. As far as i remember, Buddha said someone with good intentions was ok to teach, even if they didn't have any attainments. I'll find the sutta if nobody finds it in a few days. u can dis...

Re: Culadasa : An annoucement from Dharma Board
Sad news, he sounded like he was a well-knowledgeable teacher. Cravings for sense desires is perhaps the most difficult fetter for most to overcome. http://culadasa.com/about/ i only read excerpt from his The Mind Illuminated but it had a lot of sense. And i'm afraid there is a real difficulty in m...

Culadasa : An annoucement from Dharma Board
The beginning of annoucement It was recently brought to the attention of Dharma Treasure Board members that John Yates (Upasaka Culadasa) has engaged in ongoing conduct unbecoming of a Spiritual Director and Dharma teacher. He has not followed the upasaka (layperson) precepts of sexual harmlessness,...

Re: Jhanas, Misconceptions that have arisen regarding the Four Rupa Jhanas.
anyway this is mainly a wording issue. People who practice jhana : "the sutta taught only my pratice which is attention to breathe , and its name is jhana and it includes wisdom". People who pratice vipassana "the sutta taught my practice, which is attention to breathe, and is named v...

Re: Jhana Formula in Agamas?
the STED 4j formula (standard EBT def. of 4 jhanas) occurs in agamas just like it does in pali. I translated the EA 12.1 version here, http://lucid24.org/sted/8aam/8samadhi/8aam8/index.html Also on that page is Ven. Analayo's MA translation of the pericope. (english only, you'll have to look up the...

Jhana Formula in Agamas?
Hello,
Jhanas standard formula ( pita, sukkha, ...) is a subject of debates, including into this forum obviously. One of the issues is translation of pali terms. A lesser issue is variants on the formula.
Hence i'm wondering, what is the equivalent of Jhana formula onto Chinese Agama? This may help?

Re: extreme bliss feeling without body awareness
then bliss and body feeling (no thinking) Jhana 1, bliss "born from withdrawal". Does not match imo. Then Jhana 2, "rapture and pleasure born of composure, unification of awareness". Better, no? Some modern scholars consider Jhana 2 is where thought stops. In Visudhimagga there ...

Re: 3rd and 4th Jhana as an equanimous look at the world?
Gombrich, would have the same view. I have only one short excerpt I know this is controversial, but it seems to me that the third and fourth jhanas are thus quite unlike the second The above comment says little. Yes... sadly i don't have better quote to let Gombrich explain what he means Bhikkhu Bu...

3rd and 4th Jhana as an equanimous look at the world?
excerpt from Wynne; The Origin Of Buddhist Meditation The translation of sati as ‘mindfulness’ and upekkha as ‘equanimity’ do not do full justice to these terms. They give the misleading impression that the third and fourth jhana are heightened states of meditative absorption characterized by some s...
