Re: Right livelihood in entertainment question
Namaste i want to ask a question: i see that some singers, movie stars or athletes (soccer, box, etc) are super rich they own millions of dollars, i want to ask if their way of making money is right livelihood? or if it is worth doing? I have this doubt because there is not win-win but win-lose. Fo...

Re: Fake Speech
I had similar thoughts in the past. I had incidents when a colleague asking me "how are you" and me finding the question completely meaningless. Polite speech is better not to be interpreted literally. This is also helpful to understand rituals and how to engage with them in a non-ritualis...

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)
I think the act of grouping these verses as said by elder Bhikkhunis reflect that the nature of the task and what constitutes wisdom has nothing to do with gender issues. This is in stark contrast with modern solutions to suffering.

Re: Early Buddhism and the oral tradition
Interesting reflections by Plato on the invention of writing: And so it is that you by reason of your tender regard for the writing that is your offspring have declared the very opposite of its true effect. If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls. They will cease to exercise ...

Early Buddhism and the oral tradition
The early Buddhist discourses begin with the standard introduction "Thus have i heard". Even though i do not know pali at all, when i look at "Evaṃ me suttaṃ ", the meaning of the suttas seem inseparable from the oral tradition. I do not know when the act of writing the suttas be...

Re: Do arhants thought generate painful feeling ?
I think arahants do not crave permanence. Craving permanence is rooted in ignorance and a major cause of stress. Many understand ending dukkha to be a permanent state where how one feels is of great importance and a major criteria. Any positive outcomes from the spiritual life in terms of knowledge ...

Regarding someone as better, worse or equal is mana, conceit.
On that basis, this poll appears ill-advised.

Re: Why Buddha did not ask us to make a grand boat and cross the flood?
On the other hand, people have the habit to build bridges. Going against the grain is cutting off the bridge:
"This body comes into being through sexual intercourse. Sexual intercourse is to be abandoned. With regard to sexual intercourse, the Buddha declares the cutting off of the bridge.

Re: Why Buddha did not ask us to make a grand boat and cross the flood?
Why Buddha did not ask us to make a grand boat and cross the flood? What is the meaning of making a boat from grass, branches, and leaves? Why did he asked us to use hands and feet why not using a boat paddle? It could be because of the nature of the problem that we are supposed to solve: "I, ...

Re: Breakoff from "Gurus in Vajrayana"
As i tried to indicate on the other thread, the issue of secrecy is universal in the human realm, not only amongst the religious, but also amongst the secular type as well. This issue of secrecy can be approached in many different ways. At the most basic level, life itself appears to be a mystery. W...

Re: Are women evil?
Ever wonder why the Buddha thought if the Bhikkhunis lineage was allowed, the existence of true dhamma will be shortened? I do not know why exactly. Did the Buddha say that the true dhamma will be shortened? I thought the true dhamma is timeless, so how can it be shortened? Maybe he was referring t...
