Re: Proofreader Needed: Buddhist Legends

I should also clarify that I just included the Kindle version link in my original post for anyone who is curious enough to read the book even though it has typos. To actually do the work I am requesting, someone would need to have the file open on a computer in a word processor and make the correcti...

Re: Proofreader Needed: Buddhist Legends

This one has far more typos. And It's 243 pages as a Word document. Also, for this project, I'm looking for someone to actually sit with the file open and make the corrections. Formatting is not really an issue because I stripped it down to a pure text file before I started adding the markup for the...

Proofreader Needed: Buddhist Legends

I have been working on converting Burlingame's Dhammapada commentary, volunme 2, into e-book format. I took the text from here: http://www.archive.org/details/buddhistlegends02burluoft" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Although there is already an e-pub and Kindle format available, they...

Re: Pali Canon Recommendation for Christmas Gift?

On this page: http://readingfaithfully.wordpress.com/buildingasuttalibrary/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; there is a PDF you can download with a bibliography for building a solid English sutta library. The selection puts a priority on accuracy, readability, and availability. Those t...

Audio Sutta Recording: Itivuttaka, translated by John D. Ire

I have recently updated the page below to include zip files of my reading of the Itivuttaka with each sutta as a single mp3 track. Originally it was just four tracks with a chapter each. Now that each sutta is on a track it may be easier to repeat a sutta or get to the specific one you want. http://...

Re: Pali Canon

The link below is for a site focused on developing a daily practice of reading the suttas with suggestions on texts to start with, overcoming hindrances to reading, etc. http://readingfaithfully.org If you are just beginning I would recommend starting to make a personal anthology as explained in thi...

Re: Why are the sutta's so didactic?

(sometimes called "periscopes" by scholars). Just an FYI, the word is actually pericope, and although it looks almost exactly like periscope, it is pronounced pu'ri-ku-pee. And I believe in the Christian use of the term it is simply a small, stand alone unit of text, not a stock passage. And a bit ...

Re: Fantastic free ebooks

I just uploaded an e-book of the Dhammapada by Ven. Buddharakkhita. The text was taken from Access To Insight. It's about half way down on this page: http://readingfaithfully.org/book-sources/sutta-pitaka-e-books-epub-mobi-kindle/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Any feedback on format...

Re: Bodhi watch... or waiting for the Anguttara

Good news on the Wisdom site: Wisdom Publications has received Bhikkhu Bodhi's new translation of the Anguttara Nikaya, which is currently being reviewed by our editor. Any available information or updates on this project will be announced in the Wisdom Reader e-newsletter. http://www.wisdompubs.org...

Re: past life

If you can get a copy of it, Rebirth As Doctrine and Experience by Francis Story is worth the read. As I recall, the material is presented in a way that helps one develop confidence in the teachings of the Buddha, although I don't think it has a lot of sutta references.

Re: Making a Sutta Practice Life List

I do not take notes. When reading I go slowly, often line by line re-reading as necessary until I feel I know the meaning of the words...then when the words are clear I try to make sense of them relative to my experience. For me, I "review my notes" in my daily self observations where I can see how...

Re: Making a Sutta Practice Life List

Also, it would be good when finishing the book to write something about one's impression, points of agreement and disagreement, etc....consider that it is the thinking about what has been read that is the most important (in my view at least) and writing something like this would prompt one to do ju...

Re: Making a Sutta Practice Life List

With the advice I'm giving on the site, I try not to focus on the "understand it/don't understand it" dynamic. Instead it is geared more to having perpetual daily contact with the suttas. In this way the focus can be on trying to put into practice what one understands and trusting that as one contin...

Re: The Majjhima Nikaya: Why?

In terms of being a good text for beginners... One of the things that makes Ven Ñāṇamoli and Ven Bodhi's edition a great starter text is the introduction and the footnotes. It really is possible to start the book knowing very little about the teachings and come out with a deep relationship with the ...
