Re: What is being said here?

SN 22.48 refers to two types of aggregates.

SN 12.2 is about the second type of aggregate ("upadana khandha"), namely, "manifestation of aggregates" ("khandhānaṁ pātubhāvo").

Re: Arising of the Path

If then the path has not yet arisen for the virtuous monk, it stands to reason that they do not have Jhāna. No. It would then follow that to become a stream-enterer there must be virtue and an insight-like practice in regards to the aggregates (or sense bases too I would argue). Yes. This would tie...

Re: The use of the provisional self or 'degrees of self'

No, not illusion. Necessary and skillful 'I-making' on the path MN 117 says the Path is without asava. Becoming is an asava. Thanissaro's idea of "paradox of becoming" is 100% wrong. There are degrees of self- identifying, 'I making' and 'mine making', thus degrees of what we consider par...

No. Its just book reading, therefore a superstition for most, similar to reading about 'god' in a book.
Cause_and_Effect wrote: Fri Sep 24, 2021 1:47 pmHowever there are clearly degrees of 'self' even if ultimately of a provisional form.
No. There are degrees of delusion.

Re: Paying taxes and second precept

However, high taxes are actually difficult to pay (for many people). In fact, a 30% income tax is the highest (generally during a [temporary] economic downturn). Taxes of 20 to 25 percent are already quite large. Tax is paid from income or profit therefore it should be set aside for payment. In Aus...

Advise her of the harmful & dangerous consequences of adultery, such as: (i) broken marriage; (ii) traumatized children; (iii) loss of wealth via divorce; (iv) lasting bad reputation.

The most common are Gold, house, and land. Superstition. Any investment requires research & valuation; what the Buddha called "yoniso manasikara". Today the world is crazy with very low interest rates causing inflated asset prices. Now in China, the largest real estate developer is in...

Do you have Sutta Knowledge? Which sutta refers to the "birth" ("jati") of self-view? Thanks :thanks:

Congrats. I have no experience at all with females. Virgin, no past relationships at all. So you're better than me in this aspect in terms of experiences. You can give better advices. My wisdom was mostly born from the "death" of one well-intentioned, very nice but ignorant young lady (pl...

Re: Is it good karma to be born as a westerner?

Are rich people better than poor people? MN 135 appears it might possibly say the rich did good karma in past lives. Therefore, those born in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia must have done bad kamma in past lives (except the Chinese millionaires in Indonesia who own tobacco and cigarette plantati...

Re: Who/what do you think the Christian god is?

Whether god exists or not, and so on, The most important thing is to study the contents of the holy book. Hebrew God (apart from its use for tribal eugenics) is an anthropomorphic representation of the law of karma. Exodus 20:5 “You shall not bow down to [idols] or worship them; for I, the LORD you...

Re: Omnipotence

The Buddha had a limited form of omnicience. There is a sutta passage where he spoke of this. I think this is the context rather than 'omnipotence'. He said that it is impossible for any being to know everything that exists simultaneously. While i am not so smart in philosophy, my impression is 'om...

Re: I own shares of stocks and funds

There's nothing wrong with owning funds of stocks or bonds (particularly index funds which invest in a general total market rather than specific industries). There may be problems with owning individual stocks which do business in a certain area (poisons, killing, intoxicants, meat, etc). In the UK...
