Re: If a stream-winner...

Some more for this topic -) A fragment from my Q-and-A session (June 2009) with Ajahn from Thai Dhammayut Nikaya. He is said to have supernatural powers and considered by some thai lay people as arahant; don't remember what is his name ;-/): Q: Some people say that when person becomes a sotapanna, h...

Re: Heaven and Hell

Does one spontaneously arise in Heaven or Hell? Yes: "What is egg-born generation? There are these beings born by breaking out of the shell of an egg; this is called egg-born generation. What is womb-born generation? There are these beings born by breaking out from the caul; this is called wom...

Re: The rupa in nama-rupa

"'From consciousness as a requisite condition comes name-and-form.' Thus it has been said. And this is the way to understand how from consciousness as a requisite condition comes name-and-form. If consciousness were not to descend into the mother's womb, would name-and-form take shape in the w...

Re: Extreme Headaches!

I read a great deal about Dhamma(I am very new) and in one of the articles, I read that some chronic diseases can be cured by Vipassana/meditation. If these headaches is the result of her past bad deeds (kamma), this can be cured by regular metta-meditation (thoughts of kindness directed to numerou...

Re: Marriage to non-Buddhists

I've been a Buddhist since the age of 15 when I read "What the Buddha Taught" by Walpola Rahula. I'm now in my 50's, and have become ever more convinced that what the Buddha taught is the way. My problem is that my wife is a very devote Catholic and is continually forcing her views on me ...

Re: If a stream-winner...

It seems to me that sotapanna level is not so high (for a buddhist) as some may think.. At this, a number of the Sakyans, whenever they met each other or came together in company, were indignant and angry, and said scornfully: "A fine thing, a marvelous thing! Nowadays anyone can become a Strea...

Re: How do we know?

I like this sutta very much on this topic -)) "Lord, who craves?" "Not a valid question," the Blessed One said. "I don't say 'craves.' If I were to say 'craves,' then 'Who craves?' would be a valid question. But I don't say that. When I don't say that, the valid question is ...

Re: Buddhism and the Soldier

I don't agree with Dukkhanirodha that one should just "accept that we be slaughtered brutally without fear and resentment". I do not recall the Buddha saying anywhere that we should just be vegetables when faced with violence towards ourselves or others. Actually I gave a quotation above....

More: Phagguna, is it true, that you spend much time with the bhikkhunis? Do you maintain such an association with the bhikkhunis that when a bhikkhu blames the bhikkhunis in your presence, you get annoyed and talk in favour of the bhikkhunis, and when a bhikkhu blames you in the presence of the bhi...

Re: Kamma_2 Questions

Now lets see my confusion: isnt strange that the result (vipaka) of my bad action is the cause (kamma) of a bad action of other person? Why strange if everything in this world is interconnected? And yes, if Lord Buddha said that this question should be put aside - it is better to follow his advice ...

There is consciousness outside 6-class-consciousness, and it is too inconstant and stressful. "In dependence on the intellect & ideas there arises intellect-consciousness . The intellect is inconstant, changeable, of a nature to become otherwise. Ideas are inconstant, changeable, of a natur...

Re: Rasmussen/Snyder "Practicing the Jhanas"

But this is not the only place where this luminous mind is mentioned. There are much more suttas where it is said about this luminous mind in the context of jhana. For example: MN 140 - http://www.mahindarama.com/e-tipitaka/Majjhima-Nikaya/mn-140.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return...
