With the mere arising of intention to possess another's property, or enjoy sexual relations with the spouse of another, one makes the unwholesome mental kamma of covetousness (abhijjhā), which leads to the lower realms. Period of silence is nothing in comparison with locking oneself in a (small?) dark cave for a year.Long periods of silence are attested in the canon, e.g. Gangatiriya in the Theragatha.
