Vibhanga: How is kayanupassana practised in 1st jhana ???

Dear Abhidhamma expert/s The Vibhanga appears to say, consistent with Sutta, the experience of the 1st jhana only has five factors, namely: 12.2. Analysis According to Abhidhamma 12.2.1. Skilful Dhammas Characteristic of the Plane of Form The four jhānas are: First jhāna, second jhāna, third jhāna, ...

Re: Translating "satipaṭṭhānānaṁ" in dative case ???

The pericope "samudayañca atthaṅgamañca desessāmi" is preceded by a genitive, not a dative. Because the plural forms of the genitive and dative are identical, you need to look for "samudayam" etc. corresponding to something in the singular. dukkhassa samudayañca atthaṅgamañca desessāmi This constru...

It seems by developing zeal (chanda) concentration can be attained . They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm , and active effort. Re: Translating "satipaṭṭhānānaṁ" in dative case ???

Isn't ending of origination the solution to suffering? Yes. But generally the suttas only say unwholesome things "originate". Satipatthana is not an unwholesome thing. Don't get stuck on words, think through them.... Your master Thanissaro himself said, similar to my good self:  This discour...

Re: Translating "satipaṭṭhānānaṁ" in dative case ???

Sam Vara wrote I don't think so, in that the teaching is of the origin and the disappearance of the four satipatthānas. Thanks Sam, now I feel a whole lot better. It appears Sam Vara did not confirm or support anything you wrote. Point of Samma sati is to wipe out the 4 main domains where the mind ...

Re: Translating "satipaṭṭhānānaṁ" in dative case ???

Admittedly Sujatho uses the word principles, (what does he mean by principles?)  Bodhi does not use the word principles, he uses phenomena. Bodhi said in his footnote it could mean "principles", such as the Seven Factors Of Enlightenment Phenomena is elsewhere translated as mind's objects. The word...

Re: What is your strategy for attaining Sotapattimagga & phala?

Chanda is necessary for the practice of Jhanas and thus towards Enlightenment as stated in Saccavibhanga Sutta delivered by Arahant Sariputta Mahathera. No. The Saccavibhanga Sutta does not say chanda is necessary for the practice of Jhanas and thus towards Enlightenment. The Saccavibhanga Sutta sa...

Re: Retrofuturist's Brief Sutta-Based Refutation of Abhidhamma

Common Abhidhamma Argument #1 - Mentality and materiality are paramattha dhammas (i.e. ultimate dhammas) Sutta Reponse: Never in the Suttas are materiality referred to as "dhammas". Dhammas are phenomena, whereas materiality is noumena. Instead, materiality is represented in the Sutta via mahabhuta...
