Re: Who are the (modern) protestant Buddhists?
One could also say that Modern Theravada is a Protestant movement in the reforms of the Thai King Mongkut, with the Dhammayuttika sect, i.e. "the back to the scriptures sect" which threw away traditional practices it interpretted at odds with the suttas. And of course this order spread to ...

Re: Who are the (modern) protestant Buddhists?
Greetings. We read: Actually your statement is from one particular construal of the Buddha's silence in that sutta — a construal that happens to be favoured by certain modern protestant Buddhists . Your statement is the claim of certain modern protestant Buddhists, neo-Pudgalavādins, Hindus, Theoso...

There is also confusion from translating too many different words as consciousness in English.cappuccino wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2017 5:54 am The inconstancy of consciousness is of content.

But then as I was reading an old PTS translation of Buddhaghosa's commentary on a part of the Abhidhamma, and it so completely disagreed with no-self that I realized here too modern Buddhism is not trustworthy. It would be interesting to see what it was you read. For instance, Buddhaghosa's comment...

(3) was taught by Ajita-Kesakambali, a third contemporary of the Buddha who asserted that any belief in good action and its reward is a mere delusion, that after death no further life would follow, that man at death would become dissolved into the elements, etc. Ah, there's the historical "Bud...

Re: What is the difference between Jhana and Samadhi?
In Sutta pitaka we find two Suttas namely Jhana sutta and Samadhi sutta. What is the difference? http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an04/an04.041.than.html http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an09/an09.036.than.html The first link is broken. Ah, just have to remove the 5 at the end. ...

Re: Why is the Visuddhimagga so influential, when it introduces teachings not sourced in the Pali Canon?
The Buddhaghosa bashing in this thread is quite distasteful and baseless. While there are theories in the Vism that are not in the suttas, there is alot of wisdom in that text and in his commentaries. And as venerable Dhammanando mentioned, those theories that are not drawn from the suttas are pret...

Re: Is postmodernism "a product of sheer stupidity" according to Buddhism ?
I never liked the label they chose for themselves, "postmodernism" is misleading, it makes it sound like it's not a specific ideology which it is. They want to sound vague and diverse when it's a very precise set of beliefs and view of the world, same as materialism, christianity, etc. No...

Re: Is postmodernism "a product of sheer stupidity" according to Buddhism ?
Post-modernism lies by its name, because it is in fact modern, or perhaps pre-modern modernism that was post-modern to another modernism. Now there is a post-post-modernism too, because liars can't stop making up lying titles. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-postmodernism The fact that whatever...

Re: Differentiating Buddhism from Hinduism
The parable of the prodigal son, as contained in the Gospel of Luke, was originally a parable about the Buddha in the Lotus Sutra. Nonsense. First, its a parable of replacement theology with the prodigal representing the gentiles and the elder brother the jews. Second, I find it doubtfull the level...

Re: Server migration Sept 22
Hi David, Do you mean you can't locate the server on your phone, or there is a problem when you do connect? If the former, it's like the opposite problem to the one I had. I could connect using my phone but not at home or at work. At home has now resolved itself, at work, not yet. My guess is that ...

Re: Ignoring jury duty request
Of course, if you get selected for questioning or whatever then you'll probably want to find some way to honestly suggest to them that you are not a good candidate for the task. Just say "I'm a Mainstream Buddhist and I believe taking a position on anything is a sin, so the jury will totally b...
