Re: AN 3.23 Saṅkhāra Sutta. Volitional Activities.
From Anicca Vata Sankhara by Bhikkhu Bodhi The word sankhara is derived from the prefix sam, meaning "together," joined to the noun kara, "doing, making." Sankharas are thus "co-doings," things that act in concert with other things, or things that are made by a combina...

Re: How did you come to Buddhism? (poll)
I had a lot of stress and anger from work which was ruining the time I had with my family. I tried a breath counting zen method I found on the internet and am so lucky that I got very positive results right from the beginning. My interests moved to Theravada because of the vast amount of free materi...

Re: Is thinking of death to "let go" harmful?
Its the abruptness of death that is important, not just contemplating the inevitablity of death. Its the immediacy, that even your next breath is not guanteed, that is required to get the strong sense of inconstancy and your own mortality that is so liberating. Mindfulness of Death sutta: When this ...

Re: Have I understood Non-Self correctly?
Don't kill The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs is an idiom I use to remind myself not to get distracted by insights that come up in the practice but to stick with the process that generates insights.

Re: Can we keep "God" (Abrahamic religion) as the meditation object?
Some snippets from Islamic poet Rumi on meditation: At times my state resembles sleep: a misguided person may think it is sleep. Know that my eyes are asleep, (but) my heart is awake: know that my (seemingly) inactive form is (really) in action. The Prophet said, “My eyes sleep, (but) my heart is no...

Re: between breaths and controlled breathing
Ven T's use of the word "breath" is not in a literal sense. He's talking about awareness sensations or "energy".

Re: Bhikkhu Analayo's Lectures on the Madhyama-āgama
Yes, and he's very modest about all of it, which makes listening to his talks such a pleasure, and makes him so worthy of respect in my opinion. There's never any sense that he's trying to put down other viewpoints. :anjali: Mike Yes, he has that great quality. He is very careful to say that his fi...

Re: Bhikkhu Analayo's Lectures on the Madhyama-āgama
Bhikhu Analayo is inspiring because he is able to combine prolific academic work with extensive meditation practice. I believe he works 3 days a week, and dedicates 4 days a week to meditation. Those are great classes and not just academic. There are nuggets of Analayo's own style of practice scatte...

Re: Buddhist Scriptures prophesizing Prophet Muhammad.
In his mystical writings (the Commentary on the Forty Hadith , for example) the ayatollah undoubtedly had some astute and insightful things to say about the contemplative life that may well have been born of personal experience. Nonethless I rather doubt that he "meditated at all times". ...

Re: Your advice on Youtube guided mediations
These 10-15 min Thai Forest pep talks are given to monks before they meditate and they are *very* popular. They are not guided meditations, but provide motivational reminders for your practice.
