Re: the great rebirth debate

there is a difference between weak and strong emergence. the strong emergence of awareness is currently known as 'the hard problem of consciousness', for which there is not even any slight clue of how to deal with in the scientific community, nor has there been much progress in the last couple of d...

Re: the great rebirth debate

really, what did you read? I have a book where his arguments are presented. For example there was example which goes something like: even though one's body doesn't change, the mind can still change, thus mind is independent of the body. This is totally false. Today through fMRI and other advanced m...

Re: the great rebirth debate

a particle, nor a collection of particles, nor an organ, etc, can produce 1st person experience And you know this how? because the function of a particle can only effect things of similar type ie. other particles. sheer awareness that you are using right now does not impact physical things. it does...

Re: the great rebirth debate

There is no such thing as a logical proof for rebirth or kamma. Rebirth is logically possible but it isn't logically necessitated. So please, don't even attempt to use logic to prove rebirth, it just looks bad. :sage: dharmakirti and all of his commentators for 1500 years have given incontrovertibl...

But some people would say the cause is entirely physical. "You" exist because of the reproductive process, which res...

Re: Difficulty with certain kind of conception of Kamma.

This seems to make kamma result to be somewhat random if ...ALL pleasant/unpleasant resultant events that happen are results of past kamma. Well, this isn't said to be the case (it is actually refuted) so the question is a mere hypothetical, neh? Well, if we analyze what is taught - it seems like a...

Re: Trouble with Anapana

the antidote is to bring to mind very clearly the benefits of meditation and why youre doing it I would like to attain Jhana meditation, or Samadhi as I first heard it called, so if this happens should I concentrate on the benefits that arise from this state? jhana is a perfected type of samadhi. y...

Re: the great rebirth debate

Saying "confident of the benefits" alongside "wracked with doubt" seems contradictory... Belief in rebirth provides an additional layer of meaning and purpose to our lives, motivates us to practice, and is an inextricable part of what the Buddha taught. The Buddha also taught the importance of crit...

Re: Trouble with Anapana

Problem No.1 its a natural problem that comes up. basically youre getting bored with watching the breath. the antidote is to bring to mind very clearly the benefits of meditation and why youre doing it. then form a strong intention to stay on your meditation object and to pay attention to the momen...

Re: the great rebirth debate

Huh? Where did I say "momentary cause and effect"? I'll give you a clue... I didn't. so you have a presentation of dependent arising that is other than the multiple life presentation and other than the succession of moments presentation. what presentation are you then using? Non-time-delineated... ...

Huh? How can either of the statements you refer to be called "nihilism" when neither are making any claim whatsoever about the validity or otherwise of rebirth? if you take the view that dependent arising as momentary cause and effect excludes there being an explanation of dependent arising over a ...

although they lack access to that they by definition know of past and future lives by virtue of having realizing the 3rd path. Do they? I thought they say, "jati is ended".
