Re: what do no-selfers think the aggregates are?

You are not the first to misunderstand viññāṇaṃ anidassanaṃ , and launch it into some eternal notion. For a laugh, read Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu’s Mind Like Fire Unbound . Is this a rebuttal/dismissal of Ven Thanissaro or an encouragement for people to read Ven Thanissaro's literature and be humoured by ...

Re: What do you think of "Liberation Unleashed"

I'm sure this has been covered before but just to be sure..... I know that the buddha said "I have no self" is wrong view but did he ever say "there is no self" is wrong view? If he did could you bring a reference to that effect? chownah edit: Maybe don't bother with this. I have been looking aroun...

Javi wrote:The Buddha did apply the concept of the middle way to the metaphysics of existence, not just asceticism, see the kaccanagotta sutta
I wouldn't bother. He'll just decide that that sutta is unauthentic/fake if it disagrees with his preconceptions. That is the pattern of how things have gone so far.

Re: How to make sense of Buddhist variety

"Prove that Awakening does or does not exist" "Prove that God does or does not exist" "Prove that reality itself does or does not exist" "Prove that I do or do not exist" These are fundamentally unanswerable questions to anyone who wants to be maximally epistemically humble. Rather the Calvinist is...

Re: what do no-selfers think the aggregates are?

Your term "no-selfer" concerns me. Someone who delineates self as existant is making the same mistake as someone who delineates self as non-existant. Along with both and neither. "There is a self" is wrong view "There is no self" is wrong view "There both is and isn't a self" is wrong view "There n...

Re: How to make sense of Buddhist variety

I don't think the kind of absolute epistemic and ontological certainty that the OP is questing for exists in any way that does not fundamentally transcend anything that would ever be called "normative experience". Could you elaborate on this? I am certainly questing for absolute epistemic and ontol...

Re: what do no-selfers think the aggregates are?

Here is a question to you. If the Buddha really believed in a self outside the five aggregates, why not just say so? This is similar to my line of reasoning when approaching the subject. A "true self" that transcends, but is "trapped in" delusion, ignorance, and suffering, which is not the aggregat...

Re: what do no-selfers think the aggregates are?

What if this "something" lacks own-being and fundamental sameness-of-nature? I'm not saying your self pops out of your body after death, floats around as "something", then pops into a new body. What I am saying is that there is karmic continuity between births, which, I don't think, shouldn't be an...

Re: what do no-selfers think the aggregates are?

Where is eternalism if what endures is not "you"? And "There is no self" is quite plainly stated in the suttas to be a wrong-view. When you say "something endures" - just this is eternalist view, because if there smth "endures", this means, this can never be destroyed, can never perish, is not affe...

Re: what do no-selfers think the aggregates are?

Regarding the OP, these "no-selfers", if they do indeed exist en masse, either on the internet or in reality, with respect to the aggregates, I think they would just say the aggregates are "not the self".

Re: what do no-selfers think the aggregates are?

In keeping with the title of this tread let me say that I am a no-selfer in that it really seems to me that there is no self lurking anywhere. I know that this is a wrong view according to my understanding of what the buddha taught. I hold this view because my experiences seem to point to the non-e...
