Re: Letting go vs Being proactive
"MN 2 gives an idea of right exertion's range of application by listing seven ways in which unskillful qualities can be abandoned: seeing, restraining, using, tolerating, avoiding, destroying, and developing. The passage is deliberately vague as to which types of unskillful qualities respond t...

Re: Is cussing a form of false speech?
As others have said, many esteemed teachers of the dhamma agree that cussing counts as harsh speech. IMO, there has to be a crude mindset behind someone before they say a swear word. Often times, swearing comes from an unwholesome, harsh place.

Re: Letting go vs Being proactive
I have to agree with the others and say that they are not mutually exclusive. I feel that being proactive and assertive situations can be very beneficial if one has good intentions behind it. Other times, it is best to just let go. Perhaps one could even be detached while being proactive! That is so...

Re: Most efficient way to practice for a householder?
I am glad that you have had this insight. This was an insight I have had before. I would look around and think "Hey - everything is going well in my meditation practice. I am going on retreats, studying the dhamma, and practicing meditation, so why am I still suffering." Of course, it was ...

Re: Smile fakers
I really like your opinion in regards to this and it is something that got me thinking. IMO, smiling is of great benefit to me because I believe our posture and facial expression have a great impact on how we feel internally. When one is happy and at ease, they are inclined to smile. Likewise, when ...

Re: What is papanca?
In short, from what I understand based on the knowledge from Concept and Reality by Ven. Ñāṇananda, papanca is mental proliferation. This can be likened to how we create one thought, but then think about it, which creates another and another and another. Visually, I imagine how a small snowball - on...

Re: Learning in Florida!
Welcome to the forums!
Similarly to you I currently reside in Florida, I have made a refuge out of the dhamma, and I am abandoning my own addiction- bulimia and anorexia.
I wish you well

In addition to all of the wonderful advice you have received insofar, I am surprised that no one has posted the Sigalovada Sutta which is The Layperson's Code of Discipline. http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/dn/dn.31.0.nara.html#fn-1 Books on Buddhism can only get you so far, and it can also i...

Re: How did you come to Buddhism? (poll)
When I was 13, I was seeing a therapist for a mood disorder and he recommended meditation as a way to help cope with the difficulties that we're arising. Sometime soon after that, I listened to a guided meditation, and I was astounded at the sense of peace and tranquility the practice instilled in m...

Re: Hello ^^
Hi _anicca_, as far as food and weight and all that.. My dad is very overweight, but he was told not to worry about eating less, or how much he's eating, or any of that. Just to concentrate on eating healthy , and being healthy(exercise/limiting alcohol and all that). So that's what he does now and...

Hello ^^
Hey there, I am a former member of this forum and, after a brief hiatus from the online realms, I have returned. I am 17 years old, and I have been practicing meditation and following the Buddha's teachings since I was 12 or 13. I plan on majoring in Buddhist Studies, and I'm interested in ordaining...
