Re: It depends what you mean by rebirth

So if a flame goes out due to no more fuel, where did it go? That is parinibbana, the nibbana without residue; not for regular worldlings still in samsara. Correct. No one other than an arahant has truly broken through that perception of a self. Not even the non-returners. 'Friend, concerning these...

Re: It depends what you mean by rebirth

Things either have an atta or are without an atta. Sabbe dhamma anatta means all things are without an atta. No atta to be found anywhere. Not even in "Nibbana". Without an atta, there is no birth or death of that atta. As long as there is a perception of an atta(self), there is the idea of rebirth,...

Re: Suññata and Anattā

Both are found in the Buddha's teachings. whatever, whether past, future or presently arisen, whether gross or subtle, whether in oneself or external, whether inferior or superior, whether far or near must, with right understanding how it is, be regarded thus: 'This is not mine, this is not I, this ...

Noun of sanjanati. Minute 1:45 https://soundcloud.com/sasanarakkha/18-q-a-what-is-sanna Bhikkhu Bodhi states: The characteristic of perception is the perceiving of the qualities of the object. Its function is to make a sign as a condition for perceiving again that "this is the same," or its function...

Re: Sanna is conceiving

Sanna means knowing blue, red, etc from the eye-consciousness and knowing bitter taste, sweet taste, etc from tongue consciousness, etc and so on from all the senses. It is important to note Vedana and Sanna are conjoined hence difficult to know the difference. Refer to MN 43 :goodpost: Sounds like...

Re: Nibbana. Are we chasing a mirage?

Perhaps a person can be equanimous but it is still may not be Nibbana Of course. But that wanting for something even if it is Nibbana is still craving. A good type of craving! "'This body comes into being through craving. And yet it is by relying on craving that craving is to be abandoned.' Thus wa...

Re: Nibbana. Are we chasing a mirage?

Nibbana. Are we chasing a mirage? Many of us do not know what Nibbana is. But we all are trying to attain it. For me, it sounds like I am planning to go to the second moon on earth. Then again Buddha's teaching is more clouded with ideas like a rebirth, Kamma Vipaka, dependent origination, etc. We ...

Re: Meaning of acquisition of sense base

147. Behold this body — a painted image, a mass of heaped up sores, infirm, full of hankering — of which nothing is lasting or stable! 148. Fully worn out is this body, a nest of disease, and fragile. This foul mass breaks up, for death is the end of life. 149. These dove-colored bones are like gour...

Re: Meaning of acquisition of sense base

Question...Is this acquisition upadhi? In the sense that you pick up the seeing and make it personal. Instead of "in seeing just the seen", it becomes "I am seeing." You pick it up, it is yours. The term "acquisition" (upadhi), in its everyday sense, denotes the possessions, baggage, and other parap...

Re: Cuti Citta as Buddhism in a Nutshell

As I understood, this means not to get attached to the body (or soul) thinking it is eternal. This does not mean there is no body in the first place or there was no one born in the first place and therefore no one actually dies. As far as I can understand, we should interpret it as following; We sh...

Re: Cuti Citta as Buddhism in a Nutshell

Cuti Citta is mentioned throughout suttas. It is considered as one of the main things related to rebirth. If someone can control this, he/she will not get attached to any thoughts at the final moment of life. As a result, he/she will not go to another life. Isn't this what happens with an Arhath? A...

Re: Why should we seek Nibbana/Nirwana/Enlightenment?

Because in a world that depends on conditions, there is no permanent solution. Global warming, wars, ageing, sickness, death, loneliness and so on. Wealth, fame, health, companionship and many other things we wished for are all dependent on conditions which are impermanent and unsatisfactory. "Monks...

Re: The case that dependent origination in the Suttas refers to Rebirth is very strong.

How can the "rebirth" be physical if the body/form is not-self? You can argue that birth and death happen only once. There has to be a self for a re-birth to take place -unless of course, you are what the Buddha called a run-of-the-mill person. Perhaps DO only "applies" to the uninstructed who assum...

Re: property of deathlessness

What does it means ? Is it something can be made known ? Pls give some example . Thanks Take the property of space. Space is not created and not destroyed. It is permanent unlike all the objects within space. Space is however a concept. Most people know what space is. Nibbana isn't a concept - so i...
